Support for Year 11 pupils

We have developed transition materials for schools to pass on to their Year 11 pupils to provide support for pupils transitioning into post-16 studies. These resources have been created by our Curriculum Managers who have developed subject materials for the different levels delivered at our College. Please see below.

Accountancy 

The key skills you will be using throughout this course are numerical, application, analysis and reporting on information.

Art, Design & Media 

The key skills you will be using throughout this course is critiquing your artwork and having knowledge on the fundamentals of art.

Beauty Therapists are needed for a number of different jobs and tasks in the workplace and require a number of skills. Carpentry & Joinery

Carpenters are needed for a variety of different aspects associated with building a house. They are used for framing walls and partitions, building stairs, roofing, making door and window frames and installing them, making cabinets and installing them, shaping furniture as well as many other smaller tasks. Use this link for further information about this career and how versatile a carpenter can be.
The key skills you will be using throughout this course are measuring, angles, trigonometry  and reading and understanding technical drawings. Watch this video and look for others that will enable you to see the joints you may be using when you are in college.

Computer Science

Dental Nursing 

The key skills you will be using throughout this course include: understanding ratios to mix materials and writing clinical notes and communicating with patients. You will develop an understanding of patient care. You will assist the dentist and other dental professionals with caring and treating different patients. Skills that will be learnt; Mixing filling materials, medical emergency CPR training, aspirating, decontamination of equipment, charting and much more. On completion, after higher education, can lead to career opportunities such as hygienist, therapist or dentist.

Early Years

Early Years Practitioners can work in many different settings including Nurseries, Preschools, Primary schools, Childminders, Hospitals etc. You can work with children from birth to five. EYPs encourage children to learn and develop, through play and teaching. They create secure environments, using imagination to help children to learn. It’s important to work with parents to support their children. EYPs enable children to build their literacy, language and numeracy skills. Monitoring progress and planning educational games. Putting together activities which will keep the children engaged throughout the day. They help children get ready for the transition into a classroom environment. Electrical 

The key skills you will be using throughout this course include: knowledge of transposition of formulae, Pythagoras & trigonometry for calculations associated with ohms law, lighting, power factor correction and cable design. Good communication both verbal and written are required for when communicating with customers and employer.

Engineering

Enterprise skills 

The key skills you will be using throughout this course include: knowledge of business types and basic functions, business terminology and running enterprise activities, managing own workload, working as a team, problem solving and working to deadlines.

Health & Social Care 

 

A Health and Social Care (HSC) worker could support lots of people including older people, those with learning disabilities, physical disabilities and mental health conditions such as people with depression, anxiety, schizophrenia and personality disorders. A HSC worker can work in different settings including hospitals, care homes and client homes.

The key skills you will be using throughout this course include: time management, medication administration, taking body measurements, preparing specialist feeds and setting feeding pumps, everyday maths, calculations to check observations - blood pressure, sats etc, spelling and grammar, verbal communication skills, reading written notes and following instructions.

The key maths skills you will be using throughout this course include: pressures, electrical formula and speed and distance. The key English skills you will be using includes report writing completion of handover documentation.

Plumbing & Domestic Heating

Plumbers and gas/ renewable engineers are needed for a variety of different aspects associated with building a house. They connect water both hot and cold as well as drainage and also heating of the room and water and not forgetting the ventilation and gas safety. They also service and maintain these areas and complete repairs as required.

Skills for Living and Working in the UK

The SLUKY course provides students with the skills required for living and working in the UK. It enables students with English as a second language to gain the English, maths and ICT requirements to progress onto full time vocational courses/ apprenticeships/ employment or higher education. Teachers set high expectations of students, specifically on timekeeping, attendance and application to the course, to maximise potential and ensure that students are ‘work ready’.

Sport & Fitness

The key maths skills you will be using throughout this course include: timings, distances, speeds and heart rates. The key English skills you will be using include: leading/ coaching, producing presentations, writing assignment, research skills and bibliography. To develop these key skills read about confidence in leading and instructing here.

Also have a try at researching current industry jobs, researching about healthy eating guidelines and the components of  a healthy diet and functions of food groups.

The key maths skills you will be using throughout this course include: calculation of costs for itineraries and applying discounts, converting currencies, calculating time zones and elapsed flying times and working to a budget. The key English skills you will be using include: communicating verbally and accurately to customers and peers, independent Referencing of resources used, key travel industry terminology, confident public speaking skills and written structure of an essay skill.
