What opportunities will this course give me?
On successful completion of Level 3, students can progress onto job roles such as an Early Years Practitioner in a nursery or pre-school or a teaching assistant in a primary school. This qualification can also lead to work in home-based childcare or work abroad with children. What will I be learning?
You will study a wide range of units including child development, health and well-being, additional needs, childhood illness, children's play and supporting children's emergent literacy and numeracy. You will also learn about different theoretical perspectives and international approaches to early years practice. Methods of learning will include direct teaching, group work and independent research.
Why is this course for me?
All work is assessed against grade boundaries A*-D. This includes projects, assignments external assessments and work based experience. All students are required to undertake substantial work placement, timetabled on alternate weeks, that forms a mandatory and graded part of your qualification. You should expect to spend at least 10 hours of independent study time outside of class.
What do I need to sign up?
This programme is suitable for 16 - 19 year olds. A minimum of 5 GCSEs (including English and maths) at grade A*-C / 9-4 or Functional Skills at L2, is required. You must attend an interview in college and demonstrate an interest in childcare and commitment to study.
You will need to be organised, have excellent communication skills and be able to work using your own initiative.
You will also require a satisfactory DBS check in order to work with children.
Is there anything else I need to know?
Successful completion of Year One of this Level 3 programme is a pre-requisite to entry onto Year Two.
Additional costs incurred will include purchasing a relevant text book, stationery, USB memory stick and a College polo shirt for work placement.
There is a mandatory requirement for students to have a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check in order to attend work placement. The DBS application and associated ID evidence must be processed by October half term for learners to continue further with their course.
