Tina hadn’t been involved in art since school, but in recent years decided to take up crafts and regularly made scrapbooks and cards. It wasn’t long before she started to become interested in all forms of art, especially after taking the Sketchbooks course at Eastleigh College.

Tina decided she wanted to progress onto the Building an Art & Design Portfolio course, and began experimenting with new forms of art. Her favourite was the print making, as this was very different from anything she’d done before.

For her final project, Tina created a series of totem poles to represent a family tree. She had already decided that she wanted to work with symbols, and sought inspiration from Aboriginal artists who created totem poles for their clans to mark the 200 years of white settlement on their land. Combining these ideas, Tina erected a totem pole for each person in her family tree, going back ten generations.

Tina is now studying the HNC course, and plans to continue to the HND before completing a final year at University and getting a degree. “At the moment my goal is just to get the qualifications – after that, watch this space”, said Tina.

The most important thing Tina found with studying at Eastleigh was the amount her confidence improved throughout the courses. “I would never have guessed I’d be doing these things a year ago”, Tina said, “Everyone is so friendly and encouraging, and your confidence builds so much. It can be daunting, but you’ll be really surprised what you can produce.”

I would never have guessed I’d be doing these things a year ago.

Tina found the course a great way to explore different art techniques and learn more about the discipline as a whole, and is excited about the prospect of getting a degree at the end of it.
