In his last years of school Jamie wanted to be a History teacher, so he decided to study A-levels to pursue this career. However, after a while he decided that this wasn’t the career for him, and instead opted to embark on an Accountancy Apprenticeship.

Jamie completed his Level 1, 2 and 3 AAT qualification, but unfortunately this wasn’t meant to be either. So he returned to Eastleigh College to complete a Business Admin Apprenticeship while working at Eastleigh Borough Council.

Jamie is now an HR Administrator for the Council and he loves his job – on a day-to-day basis he is mostly involved with recruitment, posting new vacancies and organising interviews, in addition to other admin tasks. He finds it interesting to see what a HR department works on, as a lot of this is often behind the scenes!

Jamie’s favourite part of his Apprenticeship was looking at the legislation involved around things like data protection, which has really helped him in his current role as he deals with confidential information on a daily basis. He learned how to use a variety of software, which has given him skills in adaptability and means he is quick to pick up new systems.

When asked his favourite thing about the College, Jamie replied, “It’s a very friendly environment, both the teachers and the other students are nice. I received a lot of support from my tutor, and I probably wouldn’t have passed the course without her!”

I’ve always been pro-Apprenticeships, because it’s the only way you can learn while studying as well as being able to apply this straight away to a work environment. You learn more by making real mistakes than getting a question wrong in a classroom.

Jamie plans to continue working at Eastleigh Borough Council, as he’s had such a good experience there and would like to progress through the company.
