What opportunities will this course give me?
A Supported Internship will generally be seen as your last step in education before you springboard into the world of work. People who complete the course are not expected to go on to another course next year, but will aim to gain a job at the end of the programme.
What will I be learning?
This is a one year programme for learners with moderate learning disabilities/difficulties who are ready to go to work with support. It takes place predominantly in the workplace.
Being ready to go to work means that you are ready and willing to accept the responsibilities of holding down a job- being punctual, carrying out tasks as instructed, presenting yourself smartly, being polite, attending every day and being keen to work.
You will need to be very serious about obtaining and maintaining a job as this is a specialised work focused route. During the course you will spend the majority of your time in a substantial, unpaid work placement, with the right amount of support to help you achieve and be confident in the world of work.
Why is this course for me?
You will work closely with our Job Coach to decide where you would like to work. The Job Coach will support you to understand your strengths and weaknesses and what it is you would like to do. Once an employer has agreed, you will spend up to four days each week in work supported by the Job Coach. Time will be set aside for you to come to College and continue to develop and maintain your maths, English and other skills you may need to improve; this will be organised to accommodate your work commitments and your classes will be taught by the teaching team at College.
What do I need to sign up?
Entry on to the programme is by interview and assessment. You do not need an EHCP to access this pilot scheme just an interest in getting into work, be at risk of not achieving without some additional support.
Is there anything else I need to know?
This is a pilot scheme so places are limited, it is advisable to express an interest as soon as possible. Job coaches are happy to discuss and explore your ambitions.
