What opportunities will this course give me?
This is an approved qualification for working as a junior hairdresser. It provides a sound platform for further learning or training. The qualification will provide you with the requisite knowledge, understanding and skills to work competently as a junior stylist.
Those students wishing to study more advanced colour work, cutting and restyling can apply for progression onto Level 3 Hairdressing or other related programmes such as Level 2 Beauty Therapy.
We also provide industry placements and the fundamentals of business start ups to help start your own Hairdressing business.
What will I be learning?
Level 2 Hairdressing is a highly practical one year programme, underpinned with the theoretical knowledge required for you to work safely in the salon and understand the basics of hairdressing skills.
You will learn how to advise and consult with clients, shampoo and condition the hair and scalp, change hair colour, cut hair using basic techniques, style and finish hair, set and dress hair, salon health and safety, provide customers with a positive experience and how to promote additional services and products.
You will be supervised by technical staff and assessed on your competence. Together with your assessor, you will build a portfolio that will be a mix of theoretical evidence, exam results and practical observations. It must show achievement of all learning outcomes, assessment criteria and range as set out by the awarding body.
Undertaking work experience in a salon will be part of your learning programme. A part-time job in a salon alongside your college programme will improve your studies and progression opportunities.
All students without an 4 grade in English or Maths will be required, as a condition of the programme, to undertake either a GCSE or Functional Skills programme.
Why is this course for me?
You will mainly learn through practical demonstrations, completing tasks on your head block and working in the Colleges salons. There will be a dedicated theory session to ensure you gain all the knowledge outcomes required. Tutorial sessions are designed to track your progress. You will also have the opportunity to take part in trips to trade shows and short industry-based courses.
Assessments are through observations, witness statements, audio-visual media, written questions, oral questions, assignments and case studies. Attendance in the College per week is 16 hours for your vocational programme. It is expected that you will complete some of the theoretical evidence required at home.
To Successfully achieve this qualifications all of the following elements must be completed to the awarding body standard.
1. Graded practical assessments
2. Externally set and marked examinations
3. Externally set and internally marked graded synoptic assessment
On completion of Level 2, you will be interviewed and trade tested to check suitability of progression to Level 3. Your attendance and behaviour will also be a deciding factor towards your progression options.

We offer an industry week where industry specialists attend the college and show case top tips, new products and new courses to gain a qualifications/certificates from.

What do I need to sign up?
You will need 4 GCSEs at grade 9-3 including English and Maths or a proven achievement on a Level 1 programme such as Level 1 Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector (including Functional Skills). We will also consider attendance and attainment reports from previous education and a successful college interview.
Any student without a GCSE at grade 4 in English or Maths will be required to continue with their English and Maths study at college.
You will need to complete a successful interview in College demonstrating interest and commitment to study and any numeracy or literacy tests required such as BKSB. Good attendance and attainment reports from school or college are required.
A neat and tidy appearance with a sympathetic nature and desire to help clients is essential.
Is there anything else I need to know?
You are required to wear all black, and purchase a bespoke apron (approx £20)
A basic kit of tools is also required to allow you to practice at home and in College. You will be informed of the cost at Welcome Day £230.00 (Prices may increase) .
Additionally, fees may be charged for trips or industry qualifications offered during Industry Week.
Access to email and a PC at home is advisable.
Once you are qualified you can become a state registered hairdresser.
If you are aged 16-18 the programme is fully funded.
For learners aged 19+ the price is upon application only, and after receiving information, advice & guidance.
For the first lesson you will require paper, pens/pencils and an A4 ring binder for theory notes. Access to a camera required to produce evidence for assignments.
