What opportunities will this course give me?
This Course is suitable for individuals who have completed a level 1 course in carpentry and joinery at the college, code I1AF and who are now wishing to study carpentry in more depth and to gain employment in the industry. The focus is on practical application of skills and supporting theory.
Progression after the programme could be onto employment in the industry or an Apprenticeship.
After completing the programme and demonstrating competence on site, you may wish to develop your skills further and work towards higher NVQs/ Diplomas in carpentry or joinery.
What will I be learning?
Level 1 Site Carpentry is made up of units:
• Carry out safe working practices
• Information, quantities and communication with others
• Building methods and construction technology
• Basic woodworking joints
• Maintaining and using hand and portable power tools
Progressing onto Level 2 will reinforce your knowledge and you will complete the following units:-
• *Health, safety and welfare in construction and associated industries
• Understanding information, quantities and communication with others
• Understanding construction technology
• Carry out first and second fixing operations
• Structural carcassing
• Maintenance to non-structural carcassing operations
• *Prepare and use portable power tools
*Level 1 exemption
Why is this course for me?
This is essentially a practical programme, although there are written assignments linked to the practical work and a phase test. There is also an externally set examination and internal practical assessments.
The programme will be assessed continually through practical tasks and the completion of a log book of workshop based activities. Your theoretical work will be assessed by completion of a number of work related portfolios.
What do I need to sign up?
You must have completed a level 1 course (I1AF at E.C.) in carpentry and joinery.
You will need 5 GCSEs at Grade 9-4 including English Language and mathematics.
For internal progression, you should have achieved L1 in the relevant area as well as progressing your GCSE English and mathematics (if below a Grade 4) as well as demonstrating that you have upheld the college values.
You will require an interview with subject specialist staff to ensure you have a good understanding of the course you are applying for. Attendance and attainment reports from previous education will also be required.
Adult learners may apply for any of our full time and apprenticeship programmes and your vocational experience will also be taken into consideration alongside existing qualifications.
The programme is fully funded for learners aged 16-18.
For learners aged 19+ the price is upon application only, and after receiving information, advice & guidance.
Is there anything else I need to know?
You will need to purchase steel toe-capped shoes and overalls for this programme.
All learners enrolled on a full-time study programme are expected to attend a compulsory work or industry placement during their course. The number of hours of placement will vary from 35 hours through to 750 hours, this variance is due to the differing types of assessment on each course.
Learners should be aware that this is compulsory part of their study programme and work / industry placements will take place during the college week.
