What opportunities will this course give me?
The Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) is an internationally recognised professional body. The purpose of the Foundation Certificate in Accounting is to offer the foundation accounting knowledge needed to progress to employment, further study or apprenticeship in accountancy and finance. The broader focus of the Certificate enhances employability and can lead to employment as:
• accounts administrator
• accounts assistant
• payroll assistant
• purchase/sales ledger clerk
• trainee accounting technician
• trainee finance assistant
The accountancy and finance knowledge developed in this qualification is also the underpinning knowledge needed for the higher-level accountancy and financial skills developed in the Advanced and Professional AAT accounting qualifications.

This particular course represents a pathway to further progression towards much higher level qualifications that are run by the South Coast Institute of Technology.
The South Coast Institute of Technology is a collaboration of five further education colleges and two universities. We work with well known employers to deliver industry-led courses which fill skills gaps and support the economic growth of the South Coast.
What will I be learning?
The AAT Foundation Certificate in Accounting covers a broad range of core accounting skills, as well as accountancy-related business skills, communications and personal skills, in five mandatory units:
• Bookkeeping Transactions
• Bookkeeping Controls
• Elements of Costing
• Using Accounting Software
• Work Effectively in Finance
You will also study courses in Spreadsheets, Payroll, Mathematics for Accounting, Essential Accounting Procedures, Creating Business Documents and Accounting in a Professional Environment.
Working in accountancy requires good communication skills, information technology skills and an understanding of the business environment, as well as an understanding of daily finance/accounting functions. The purpose of this qualification is to ensure that students are well-rounded and well prepared to progress into a business, finance or professional accountancy career or into further education.
Work experience placements will require students to plan and organise their own placement and travel arrangements. This is part of the necessary development and preparation for employment.
Significant commitment to independent study is required to supplement and consolidate learning.
Why is this course for me?
A student completing this qualification will develop accountancy skills in double-entry bookkeeping and basic costing, as well as an understanding of purchase, sales and general ledgers. Students will learn to use accounting software and to develop the professional skills and behaviours needed to contribute effectively in the workplace. Working in accountancy requires good communication skills, IT skills and understanding of the business environment, all of which are included in the qualification. The Foundation Certificate in Accounting also develops additional business skills that have particular relevance to those working in accountancy, finance and general business roles. In addition, students will further develop their business communication and personal skills, and learn how to manage their personal and professional development through lifelong learning.
Units are assessed individually in end-of-unit computer based assessments and a synoptic assessment that draws on and assesses knowledge and understanding from across a number of units.
What do I need to sign up?
You will require a minimum of 4 GCSEs at grades A*-C / 9-4 including Maths & English Language.
Students should also have good attendance and attainment reports from their previous school or college, complete a successful interview and initial numeracy and literacy assessments and have a genuine interest in working in a business environment.
Is there anything else I need to know?
Text books, folders, stationery including calculators and computer storage devices and AAT membership fees will incur additional costs. It is helpful to have access to a computer outside of College; alternatively the College Learning Centre can be used.
Students need to be motivated, enthusiastic and keen to develop their skills. This is a programme of study designed to introduce students to the skills and expertise needed to be successful in business. For more information on AAT please visit www.aat.org.uk
