What opportunities will this course give me?
There is nothing quite like losing yourself in a drawing. Pencil to paper, paint to brush....it is the perfect way to escape from a busy world. However, for many of us, this lifelong passion for drawing and painting can become lost in the 9-5 and family life.
That's why we have created the Drawing and Painting for Pleasure course. This flexible, engaging course is designed to reignite your love for creating your own art, and support you in finding a space where you can make it a part of your daily life.
Our learners come to us from a huge variety of backgrounds. Many have an interest in Art History, while others simply want to return to the skills they enjoyed so much at school. We have learners who enjoy art but crave the support and accountability of a group, and some are looking for a new challenge and a way to meet different people.
Whatever your reason, the course is a perfect fit for anyone who wants to push themselves out of their comfort zone and dedicate time to doing something that brings them joy.
What will I be learning?
A variety of techniques such as pencil, charcoal, watercolours and acrylics will be demonstrated to the group. Most weeks a link will be made to an artist style/technique, helping to put art history into a context, linking the learner's work to an artists style. Art from the 20th century will be the main area of interest.
Topics such as colour mixing, proportion, composition, tone and contrast will be covered. Individuality and personal preference are encouraged, and everyone produces their own unique work. Learners are encouraged to experiment, to try new methods and techniques and to take a positive risk with their work.
Assessment is purely through discussion, no exams or tests are involved.
A College Certificate will be awarded on request.
Why is this course for me?
This course is all about variety - we want it to be interesting, dynamic and to cover all bases. You'll learn about artists - both famous within art history and more contemporary - as well as the different techniques that they use. You'll also become more confident in your preferred style of art, be it portrait, still life, landscape or animals. Content will be built around you, the learner, to guarantee you get the most out of your time on the course.
The only assessment comes from a group discussion at the end of the session; it will be informal and 100% non-judgmental. This is your chance to truly be yourself and share your personal thoughts on the lessons learnt.
We have created a safe space, encouraging you to use your intuition and initiative when it comes to decisions within your work. Essentially, it is all about developing your unique craft as an artist.
How will my learning be enhanced?
As a learner with Eastleigh College and, particularly, a leisure course recipient, you will have the chance to display your work for the pleasure of others.
What do I need to sign up?
There are no formal entry requirements to attend this course, just an interest and enthusiasm for drawing and painting and a willingness to learn and try out new ideas.
Is there anything else I need to know?
This course is suitable for anyone. Beginners and improvers are both welcome.
Learners can spend as much or as little as they want. Learners will be responsible for the purchase of materials relevant to the course. Initially, please bring any materials you already have.
Please bring drawing paper, 2B pencil, eraser and sharpener, along with any other equipment you may have. Learners will be asked to bring in photographic resources most weeks to help with their work.
