Minister of State for Skills and Apprenticeships commends College as “shining example”

Eastleigh College recently welcomed the Rt Hon Anne Milton MP to its campus.

Ms Milton, who currently serves as the Minister of State for Apprenticeships and Skills, was keen to meet with a range of employers, apprentices and full-time students during her visit, concluding that the College is “leading the way on apprenticeships and skills.”

Commenting on her visit, Ms Milton said, “Eastleigh College is a shining example of how further education providers can work with local employers to help people of all ages and backgrounds learn the skills they need to go on to have great jobs and fantastic careers.

Well done to everyone at the College, for all they are doing. The University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust and many other local employers are working tirelessly together to make sure everyone gets the best education and training possible. I wish them all the best and look forward to hearing more about their brilliant work!”

Eastleigh College, a further education college of over 50 years, is currently one of the largest providers of apprenticeships and training for employers in the country, working with over 5000 apprentices and more than 4000 employers nationally, as well as being one of the largest college providers of Levy apprenticeships in the country, since the launch of the Apprenticeship Levy in April 2018.

It is also the first college in the country to deliver Supported Apprenticeships, which aim to get more young people into sustainable work.

Dr Jan Edrich, Chief Executive and Principal at Eastleigh College commented, “It has been an honour to welcome the Minister and share with her the great work that Eastleigh College does across the country.

Not only were we able to introduce her to our diverse range of students, but we could also highlight the extensive and collaborative work that the College undertakes with its employer network, not only to improve the expertise of the students whilst on their studies, but also to develop new courses, such as the Governments T-Levels, due to launch in April 2020.”

Commenting on this valuable partnership with the College, Anita Esser, Head of Wider Healthcare Teams Education at the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, added, “I was pleased to attend today’s visit and talk to the Minister about the beneficial partnership that the Trust has had with Eastleigh College for many years, supporting the training of our staff. We are really excited about expanding this relationship with the introduction of the new T Levels, particularly in Health and Healthcare Science and look forward to working with the College to develop a course in this area.”
