Eastleigh College Business Students supporting Mental Health Week

Level 2 Business and Management learners have undertaken a challenge from Solent Mind to develop and deliver an awareness workshop for Year 9 pupils at a local school.

The workshop consisted of a presentation and activities including ‘Celebrity Match’, ‘True or False’ and ‘Mental Health pairs’. This gave learners the opportunity to implement their creative and critical thinking skills, as well as build up their confidence presenting in front of others.

The learners were able to deliver this workshop with the guidance and collaboration of Solent Mind Project Manager Abby Oakley, who regularly popped in to give regular feedback and check on the learners’ progress.

Abby Oakley commented: “I am delighted with the results; the project has been a great success providing an opportunity for both the students at Eastleigh College and Wyvern Secondary School to learn about mental health and develop a deeper understanding of the problems surrounding mental health.”

Angela Horn, Business Studies Lecturer at Eastleigh College, commented: “It was great to watch the students’ confidence grow as they developed their subject knowledge, create all the content and activities and then present - they all did a fantastic job.  A big thank you to Abby Oakley for her constant support and to Lauren Stedman at Wyvern Secondary School.”

Participating learners completed a feedback form at the conclusion of the workshop and the comments were very positive, with particular praise for the interactive elements as well as the educational themes that helped spread awareness of Mental Health.

Last week was Mental Health Awareness Week, a national campaign to increase awareness of both mental health problems and their solutions.
