What will I be learning?
You will learn how to become more confident in managing your personal safety in everyday life and dealing with conflict.
You will be taught by a suitably qualified self-defence instructor.
You will gain a greater understanding of risk and how to de-escalate potentially challenging situations.
Areas to be covered on the course include:
- Identification of risk situations and avoidance techniques
- Verbal de-escalation skills
- Practical self-defence techniques
- Victim mentality
- The human stress response system
- Confidence building
- The law in relation to self-defence
- Safety tips
Techniques will be adapted to fit individual learner needs.
A college certificate will be awarded to recognise each learners personal achievement.
Why is this course for me?
You will be taught each week through theory sessions, demonstration, discussion, group work, pair work, and individual work.
Course participants will be able to apply the techniques and strategies taught in their everyday lives.
What do I need to sign up?
There are no formal entry requirements in respect of this course. The course is suitable for anyone who is interested in learning personal safety and self-defence techniques. There is no upper age limit.
A high level of fitness is not required. However, as with any physical exercise, you should ensure you have no underlying health issues which preclude you from participating.
Is there anything else I need to know?
Learners are responsible for the purchase of resources required for the course.
Please bring a notebook and pen to the class. Please wear suitable loose fitting clothes, e.g. a t-shirt and tracksuit bottoms to aid movement. You may wish to bring a hand towel and some water. If possible, please ensure any jewellery is removed to avoid injury.
