What opportunities will this course give me?
Students who have completed the Level 2 course will be able to progress on to the Makaton Follow-Up course. The Follow-Up course is scheduled for the summer term 2020 and is 8 weeks in length.
This course may assist students to gain work, or progress their career, in care, education or any other area where an ability to use Makaton is required.
Successful completion of the Level 3 course is the starting point for students who may wish to be considered for Makaton Tutor training.
What will I be learning?
The Makaton Level 2 course is 4 weeks and aims to further develop the signing skills that you learned on the Level 1 course. It teaches the signs and symbols for Stages 3, 4 and some of the Additional Stage of the Makaton Core Vocabulary.
Other sessions also include lots of opportunities to practise using the signs and symbols taught. Together with ideas for implementing Makaton use at home or work; an in-depth look at symbols and their uses and research supporting signs and symbol use are also covered. At the end of the Makaton Level 2 course you will have the confidence and skills to use Makaton in your daily interactions with children and adults.
A certificate of attendance will be awarded to students upon successful completion of the course.
Why is this course for me?
This course will be taught and assessed by demonstration, discussion and your participation. Using Makaton is about developing effective positive communication between people. You will be practising your new skills in class with your peers, as well as being given opportunities for practise between lessons to support you in your interactions with Makaton Users.
The tutor first trained as a Makaton tutor in 2002 and has been teaching Makaton for 18 years, and at Eastleigh College for the last 10 years. Over this time, she has taught in excess of 3500 parents and practitioners all over Hampshire and beyond. As well as teaching, the tutor works part-time as an Early Years Practitioner in a Southampton Day Nursery caring for 2-5 year olds.
What do I need to sign up?
Students have already completed the Makaton Level 1 course. It will help if you are living or working with a child or adult who uses Makaton but this is not essential. Just come along with your interest and enthusiasm for enhancing life and communication skills by using Makaton.
