What career opportunities can this lead to?

Students will be able to progress on to the Makaton Refresher Course for Beginners, Makaton Follow Up Taster Session, Makaton Follow-up Course and subsequent Makaton Local Tutor Training.

This course may assist students to gain work, or progress their career, in care, education or any other area where an ability to use Makaton is required.

What are the entry requirements?

There are no formal entry requirements in respect of this course. The Makaton Beginners course assumes no prior knowledge of Makaton and is suitable for family members, carers and workers who need to use Makaton at home and in their work.

It will help if you are living or working with a child or adult who uses Makaton but this is not essential. Just come along with your interest and enthusiasm for enhancing life and communication skills by using Makaton.

What does this programme involve?

The Makaton Beginners course provides a very practical introduction to using the Makaton Language Programme.

You will learn the signs and symbols for Stages 1-4 and Additional of the Makaton Core Vocabulary. Sessions also include hints and tips for effective signing and symbol use, discussing commonly asked questions including how Makaton differs from British Sign Language, and how to introduce Makaton in everyday situations at home or work.

At the end of the Beginners course you will have the confidence and skills to begin to use Makaton in your daily interactions with children and adults.

A certificate will be awarded to those students who have completed at least 80% of the course.

How is the programme taught and assessed?

This course will be taught and assessed by demonstration, discussion and your participation. Using Makaton is about developing communication between people. You will be practicing your new skills in class with your peers, as well as being given opportunities for practice between lessons to support you in your interactions with Makaton Users.
