What opportunities will this course give me?
This course may assist students to gain work, or progress their career, in care, education or any other area where an ability to use Makaton is required.
What will I be learning?
The Makaton Follow-Up course will complete your tuition of the Makaton Core Vocabulary and as a consequence, broaden your signing skills. You will revise the signs and symbols previously learned and receive tuition for the signs and symbols in Stages 5-8 of the Makaton Core Vocabulary. In addition, sessions will explore meeting the needs of Makaton Users by adapting our own language, how to identify individual signing styles that you might encounter, and when to improve the signing skills of Makaton Users. The Makaton Follow-Up course will help effectively with a broad range of different Makaton Users.
The Makaton Follow-Up course is 8 weeks in length. A certificate of attendance will be awarded to those students who have attended at least 80% of the course.
Why is this course for me?
This course will be taught and assessed by demonstration, discussion and your participation. Using Makaton is about developing effective positive communication between people. You will be practising your new skills in class with your peers, as well as being given opportunities for practice between lessons to support you in your interactions with Makaton Users.
The tutor first trained as a Makaton tutor in 2002 and has been teaching Makaton for 18 years, and at Eastleigh College for the last 10 years. Over this time, she has taught in excess of 3500 parents and practitioners all over Hampshire and beyond. As well as teaching, the tutor works part-time as an Early Years Practitioner in a Southampton Day Nursery caring for 2-5 year olds.
What do I need to sign up?
The Makaton Follow-Up course is the progression route for students who have already attended both the Level 1 and Level 2 courses and wish to broaden their signing skills. The Makaton Follow-Up course expects a working knowledge of the vocabulary that you learned on the Level 1 and 2 courses.
If you have attended the Makaton Level 1 and 2 courses (previously known as the Makaton Beginners course), but not at Eastleigh College, you are very welcome to apply. We will ask you to have a short telephone interview with our Makaton Tutor to determine your suitability. It does help if you are living or working with a child or adult who use Makaton but this is not essential.
