Have a question?

It's often better to see what we do and seek answers from tutors!
Why not come along to one of our Open Evenings?

What career opportunities can this lead to?

Students will be able to progress on to Makaton Local Tutor training. See www.makaton.org/training/howtobecomeamakatontutor/ for more details.

This course may assist students to gain work, or progress their career, in care, education or any other area where an ability to use Makaton is required.

What are the entry requirements?

The Makaton Follow-Up course is the progression route for students who have already attended the Beginners course and wish to broaden their signing skills. The Makaton Follow-Up course expects a working knowledge of the vocabulary that you learned on the Beginners course. If you have attended a Makaton Beginners course, but not at Eastleigh College, you are very welcome to apply. We will ask you to have a short telephone interview with our Makaton Tutor to determine your suitability.

It does help if you are living or working with a child or adult who use Makaton but this is not essential.

What does this programme involve?

The Makaton Follow-Up Course will complete your tuition of the Makaton Core Vocabulary. You will revise the signs and symbols you learned during the Beginners course and learn the signs and symbols for Stages 5-8 of the Core Vocabulary. In addition, sessions will explore meeting the needs of Makaton users by adapting our language and how and when to improve the signing skills of Makaton users.

The Makaton Follow-Up course is suitable for learners who have already attended the Beginners course and wish to broaden their signing skills. It will help you to improve and develop your signing and symbol skills and how to use them effectively with different Makaton users.

A certificate will be awarded to those students who have attended at least 80% of the course and have completed the online evaluation.

How is the programme taught and assessed?

This course will be taught and assessed by demonstration, discussion and your participation. Using Makaton is about developing effective positive communication between people. You will be practicing your new skills in class with your peers, as well as being given opportunities for practice between lessons to support you in your interactions with Makaton Users.

What else do I need to know?

There are no additional costs in respect of this course.

Please bring pen and paper/notepad to the class.

Students are responsible for the purchase of materials relevant to the course.
