What will I be learning?
Come and learn some new skills and get creative on our Pottery for Beginners course. These courses are suitable for those with little or no experience of working with clay. You will learn hand building techniques and work will be completed on the worktops of the art studio.
Learners will be making ceramic items that can be used in the home and garden, or given to family and friends as gifts.
You will learn new pottery skills using the facilities at the art studio at Cantell School for the first 8 weeks of the course. You will then have the opportunity to learn glazing techniques at My Pottery Studio located at The Marlands Shopping Centre for the final 9th week of the course.
Due to social distancing and health and safety requirements, it will not be possible to use the electric pottery wheels at Cantell School for this term.
A College Certificate may be awarded upon successful completion of the course.
Why is this course for me?
All learners will complete practical work. There will be some tutor demonstrations and individual tuition.
All work will be fired in professional standard kilns.
Please note that this course runs for 8 weeks at Cantell School, with the final 9th week of the course running at My Pottery Studio, located in the Marlands Shopping Centre, Southampton.
At the My Pottery Studio session, learners will have the opportunity to learning glazing techniques, glaze their items, and achieve a finished piece of pottery.
There will be a separate charge for glazing which is paid directly to the Pottery Studio at the final session. This charge is £4 per kg of glazed pottery.
What do I need to sign up?
There are no formal entry requirements for this course.
Is there anything else I need to know?
These courses are suitable for complete beginners or those with very little experience of pottery making.
Please wear clothing and shoes appropriate for a craft environment.
Your first bag of clay is included in the course fee. Advice will be given for sourcing suitable suppliers for additional clay if this is required.
There is a charge is £4 per kg of glazed pottery payable on the final session direct to My Pottery Studio.
Learners will also be responsible for any other materials relevant to the course.

A place on your chosen course is not confirmed until all of the necessary enrolment paperwork is signed and any relevant fees are paid.
