What opportunities will this course give me?
The art of knitting is a wonderful hobby that not only ignites creativity but can be a valuable way to be mindful. It's fun, challenging and results in thoughtful, useful products; what's not to love?
Our Knitting leisure workshop will give you the initial knowledge and experience to start creating your own knitted items. Alongside a welcoming, highly engaged group, you'll learn how to knit handmade items such as a pair of fingerless mittens with decorative features, if desired.
Armed with this new skill, you will then have the opportunity to create gifts for your loved ones.
So, if you're looking to explore a new hobby, our Knitting workshop is a fantastic way to kickstart your journey.
What will I be learning?
The one day workshop will cover the basic skills, to include:
Casting on, casting off, increasing and decreasing, moss stitch, rib stitch, and how to read and understand commercial knitting patterns.
This one day workshop is ideal for anyone with no prior knowledge of the craft. The workshop will cover all of the essential elements for you to begin your journey in knitting. The course is also ideal for those with limited skills or those of you who have been away from knitting and would like to brush up on your skills with tuition at hand.
A certificate will be awarded on request.
Why is this course for me?
Knitting is more than just a skill to make useful items; it's a powerful well-being activity. The process of learning a new skill can be incredibly therapeutic. Armed with the confidence of your new skill, you may even find yourself turning away from social media scrolling and, instead, use your spare time to make something new and gain that unparalleled sense of achievement. Knitting is also known for improving fine motor skills, whilst requiring you to practice patience; two highly useful skills! Plus, it could open you up to an entirely new social circle, both at the College and outside of it. Having learnt your new skill, you may even join a local knitting circle or set up your own; the perfect balance of learning something new and increasing your social activities!
How will my learning be enhanced?
You will be taught by a passionate, highly experienced tutor with over 20 years spent learning and teaching knitting. There isn't much she doesn't know about the art of knitting, and boasts a diploma of higher education in Textiles; Knit and a degree in Fine Art.
You'll learn at your own pace, with the potential for fast learners to be taught new stitches and methods to expand on their new skills.
There will be some demonstration but the course is very practical. Stitches will be explored, students will learn how to follow a knitting pattern and will begin a small project.
