What are the entry requirements?

This course is suitable for all, especially those who are new to creative writing; anyone suitably motivated can join.

What does this programme involve?

This course is suitable for beginners. The focus will be on fiction and creating short stories and writing for the stage and screen. Other areas of study may include: poetry, discussions, short writing exercises, critical analysis and revision of work.

The course will help students to understand:

-The basics of writing short stories and long form fiction;
-The structure and shape of narrative writing;
-How to create compelling characters and locations;
-How to adopt a critical and constructive approach to their work;
-How to write for mediums other than prose;
-What they can do with their finished work when the course is completed.

How is the programme taught and assessed?

Students will learn through instruction, demonstration, discussion and undertaking exercises. Students will have frequent opportunities to put into practice the skills that are shown and will be encouraged to develop their own style. Students may approach exercises and activities in a manner suitable to how they wish to develop as a writer.

What else do I need to know?

Students are responsible for the purchase of materials relevant to the course.
