Caretaker / Cleaner / Handyperson

Reports to:

The role will report to The Community Centre Administrator of Pilands Wood Community Association

Job Overview:

To provide an effective caretaking / cleaning service, to assist and deputise for the centre Administrator in all aspects of caretaking, maintenance (inc. adhoc small jobs), cleaning, and security, with responsibility for emergency call outs.

20 hours per week (Covering opening & closing of the building as needed)

Salary:  £10.50 per hour

Location: Pilands Wood Community Centre, Chamberlayne Road, Bursledon, Hampshire  SO31 8DT

Responsibilities and Duties

Include but not limited to:

  1. Act as a key holder and be available to open and close the centre as and when required and to ensure the building is left secure when not in use.
  2. Ensure the centre is maintained to a high level. All areas internally are clean, the building is maintained, the car park is kept tidy, and the hedges / outside space is tidy
  3. Ensure the centre is set up and ready for each booking and facilitate / welcome the users to the venue.
  4. To be up to date with and complete regular testing of the fire, emergency lighting and security system.
  5. Ensure the centre has the required level of cleaning and associated supplies, place orders as required, accept and check deliveries and maintain safe storage of materials in the allocated area.
  6. Work with the Centre Administrator to plan/ complete maintenance, repair, or improvement projects.
  7. Where possible undertake simple DIY and decorating tasks.
  8. Assist with enquiries from direct workmen / contractors to the site of repair and maintenance work. Inspect, monitor, and record work performance.
  9. Organise and maintain records and documents for cleaning and health and safety checks.
  10. Report to Centre Administrator on activities / issues weekly / monthly to be included in trustee report


Person Specification

The successful applicant will have experience of cleaning and maintaining a substantial commercial or community building, who will be required to review, report and arrange the repair of any default items in and around the centre.  The caretaker/cleaner will be a key holder for the centre acting as host to facilitate bookings having access to the centre (open/ lock up) and ensure they have everything they need when using the centre.

 Abilities & Skills:

  • Facility maintenance & regular cleaning
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Reviewing, implementing & maintaining Health & Safety procedures
  • Health and safety including risk assessment and maintenance management (Desirable)
  • Able to prioritise work and demands
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Confident in completing required activities
  • Able to adapt to working with team members and centre users.
  • Team player who can use own initiative as required

Experience in:

  • Maintaining a similar facility with experience in basic plumbing, painting and electrical work
  • Creating and working to an agreed cleaning rota
  • Basic construction / repair of furniture and fittings
  • Carrying out regular deep cleans and detailed cleaning tasks
  • Using specialist cleaning equipment and tools with required training as required (Desirable)
  • Working with contractors and external agencies to complete projects
  • Being responsible for the opening, closing to ensure the security of the building
  • Notifying management of deficiencies or repairs as required
  • Health & Safety policies and procedures
  • Maintaining & managing cleaning product stock levels

All employees are required to be flexible to undertake out of hours work as required. This job description will be supplemented and further defined by annual objectives which will be developed in conjunction with the post holder.
