With Luke’s interest in taking things apart and putting them back together again, a career in the mechanics industry was the route he was keen to take. The welcoming and professional environment at Eastleigh College was one reason Luke decided to study Level 2 Vehicle Technology, which has helped him get him one step closer to his dream job.

A day at College for Luke involves theory and practical sessions, working on customer cars in the workshop. The course and learning environment has helped Luke prepare for his future, “We’re all treated like we’re in a workplace which has helped me get used to the working environment. When I’m in the workshop I feel like I’m doing a job.”

With the College’s contacts in the industry, Luke found work experience at J S Autos in Southampton, giving him experience working in the motor vehicle trade. His hard work paid off when he was offered a part-time job. Luke tells us, “I work in the garage three days a week which is great because I’m learning new skills from qualified mechanics and it also gives me an opportunity to practice the skills I’ve already learned on my course.”

The professional atmosphere and facilities in the workshop helps to prepare students like Luke for a future in the trade. He explains, “The air-conditioning machines and tyre machines are the same as those used in the garage I work in, so I already knew how to work them when I started at the garage, which was really helpful.”  As well as gaining experience using the equipment, Luke’s writing skills have also proven to help him in his job, when writing job cards to detail the work carried out on each car.

There are many options open to Luke, who is close to finishing his Level 2 and is keen to progress onto Level 3. With a passion for working with cars, Luke would like to take his training further and specialise in automatic gear boxes.

I’d definitely recommend studying the course here. It’s fun, you can get stuck in and learn new things. There’s a lot more qualifications you can do after too.
