Luke started Eastleigh College on the ICVS course, since he was unsure what career path to take and hoped the course would provide him with some ideas. Acting on his tutor’s advice, he decided to study Level 2 Business Administration, before he was accepted on a Business Admin Apprenticeship at the College, working in Reception.

Luke completed his Level 2 Apprenticeship, and then decided what he really wanted to do was combine his passion for good customer service with something business-like and profitable. The Level 3 Event Management course seemed like the perfect option for him, and he is now hoping to study at University.

Luke’s favourite part of the course was running events for the second time round, for example the College Christmas fayre. He said, “It’s interesting to be able to apply what you’ve learnt and improve on the previous year.”

However, he thought the most difficult element was trying to achieve innovation in events: “It’s hard to come up with new ideas in this day and age, as many people have already taken up the ideas.”

During his studies Luke has worked on various external events through work experience. His most memorable event was working for a Silent Disco company, running a silent disco party at the University of Southampton, where he experienced the importance of crowd control and health & safety!

Luke has already been offered an unconditional place at Southampton Solent University to study Event Management, but is open to considering other options such as full-time employment or starting a Higher Apprenticeship equivalent to a Foundation degree.

The most important part is the practical side – being able to understand everything on paper is one thing, but being able to actually run an event is different.

Luke’s advice to people looking to study Event Management is to really put in the effort to get involved with events, as the skills you’ll learn will prepare you well for a career or further study. He said, “The course isn’t just about Event Management, it’s the whole package – law, finance, communication, teamwork. That’s why I chose it.”
