With a real interest in tourism and airline work, Jake decided to study at Eastleigh College due to the locality and varied course content. Jake had considered studying at other local colleges which took a more book-based approach to learning, but the practical approach and course-work style the course boasts, best suited his learning style. Jake adds, “During the course I learned more about how to work in the industry I was studying, rather than just being taught statistics about it, which other college courses offered.”

Jake’s course really did prepare him for his career, when he landed himself a job straight after College as cabin crew with Thomas Cook for two years, before moving on to Virgin Atlantic, where he is now progressing his career even further. Studying at Eastleigh College opened up his eyes to the breadth of opportunities available in the travel and tourism sector. He explains, “When I came to college I wanted to be a holiday rep, but through doing the course and the insight I gained, I realised a holiday rep didn’t suit me at all and that actually cabin crew would suit me much better!”

For Jake, the favourite part of the course was the practical elements and the trips he benefitted from. Trips included firefighting training and a visit to Berlin, which gave him experiences he now uses in his everyday role.

The support Jake received from teaching staff was second to none. From their experience of working in the industry, Jake’s lecturers provided him with the skills and knowledge required in his field of work. The support didn’t end there for Jake, he adds, “When applying for jobs the lecturers supported me with my applications and if it wasn’t for the guidance and support they gave me, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

Being in the industry has exposed Jake to many opportunities and although he doesn’t want to work in cabin crew forever, the future is bright for him. Jake is looking to pursue his career with Virgin Atlantic, but moving forward would like to teach new recruits and be involved in their training, or even work in recruitment at the company.

The lecturers were very engaging and willing to help you progress after college. Eastleigh College is all about getting you ready for the real world.
