When Humza left school he went to College to study A levels. During his first year he realised that the methods of teaching at A level weren’t for him, and he wanted to try something different. He had always been interested in Maths and Business, so he thought an Accountancy role would be a great career for him. After his first year of A levels, Humza left to study an accredited AAT course at Eastleigh College.

In the last term of his final year studying Level 2 AAT at Eastleigh, Humza took part in a compulsory week’s work experience with local accountancy firm, Winchester Bourne. At the end of the week, the firm offered Humza an Apprenticeship role alongside studying Level 3 AAT.

Humza has been working at Winchester Bourne for several months now and is really enjoying the workplace environment. His favourite aspect of his Apprenticeship is being immersed in a real company – Humza has been really interested in learning about the industry, which has helped him make plans for his future career.

He feels his strengths lie in good communication and relationship management, which he has demonstrated in his confidence in talking to external stakeholders over the phone.

Most of all, Humza feels that studying an Apprenticeship is much better suited to him and has helped him learn key skills for employment. “At Eastleigh College you’re treated like an adult. You have to manage your own work and your timetable, which is also what is expected of you in the workplace.”

Humza’s Accountancy Apprenticeship is preparing him for his future career in a variety of ways, not least in teaching him an industry recognised qualification. After completing his Level 3 AAT course, Humza would like to progress to the Level 4 qualification before going on to study ACA and become a chartered accountant.

Don’t think that an Apprenticeship is not valued. University and A levels aren’t right for everyone. If you work hard and show ambition, it will get you a long way.
