Gina has always had a passion for cars, and learning about the mechanics was a particular area of interest for her. With the trade stereotypically being male dominated, Gina was put off going into the sector. However since turning 30, she decided to put her overalls on, do something she enjoys and pursue her dream career.

Despite looking at other colleges, Gina was impressed with the friendly staff and facilities offered at Eastleigh College, and decided to study Level 2 Vehicle Technology. With a busy life away from college, it was important for Gina to find a course which suited her lifestyle. She explains, “I work in a nursing home and have three children, but coming into college twice a week works well for me.”

Gina relishes her time at college and in particular the hands-on approach to learning and valuable support from teaching staff. With a lack of confidence at the start of her course, Gina’s tutor has worked with her to build her confidence and get her out of her comfort zone. She explains, “If I ever doubt myself, Matt my tutor is always encouraging me and tells me not to be afraid of breaking anything.”

Like other students, Gina has exclusive access to industry-standard facilities which has exposed her to a similar environment expected in the workplace, giving her the opportunity to practice using the equipment she’d be expected to use in her job.

For Gina, being in the environment she’s learning about has helped make her experience at Eastleigh a positive one. She adds, “Being in the workshop is like being in an actual garage. I’ve enjoyed the practical side of things, and being able to actually do the things I’m learning about.” With an end goal of owning her own garage, Gina’s next steps are to continue to the Level 3 course to develop her skills and knowledge even further.
