What opportunities will this course give me?
This qualification could lead to a career in the exercise & fitness industry, with a view to working as a gym instructor within the industry. Students may progress to a variety of advanced training including, Personal Training (Level 3), Circuit Training, Nutrition, Exercise to Music, Antenatal and Postnatal, Spinning (indoor cycling) and Kettlebell certificates.
What will I be learning?
The course consists of around 135 hours (total learning hours), the majority of this will be completed distance study with assessments taking place in college. The course can be completed at your own speed however it must be fully completed within 9 months of start date. The course is delivered through google classroom and supported by regular contact from the course administrator. You will learn through reading manuals, powerpoints and completing online worksheets and supplemented by email and telephone support from qualified tutors.
Assessments will take place throughout the course, the majority will take place through your learner assessment record and online via YMCA Mark book which will be completed at home. The practical assessments and theory exam will take place in college at a pre arranged dates.
You will be required to take part in gym sessions together with the completion of theory work, therefore you must have access to basic gym equipment in order to practice this aspect of the course.
A pre-course telephone interview will be completed to identify that the course is suitable for you. The qualification is gained by successfully completing one externally marked theory paper on Anatomy and Physiology and a number of online and paper based questions. A practical assessment will be carried out and assessed internally. The qualification is at Level 2 and gives you 20 points on the Register of Exercise Professionals. A mix of theory and practical sessions will be used throughout the course. The theory element of the course covers anatomy & physiology, customer experience, lifestyle management and preparing for a gym based programme. The practical element of the course consists of Cardiovascular and resistance/free weight gym training, inducting new clients into the gym environment. This will also include screening and programme writing for specific clients. You will be taught how to deliver these components and gain the relevant knowledge to complete this highly recognised qualification within the fitness industry.

A mix of theory and practical sessions and the completion of workbooks will be used throughout the course.
What do I need to sign up?
You must have a good basic knowledge of the gym environment, ideally attending a gym on a regular basis. A keen interest in human anatomy, a healthy lifestyle, Health and Safety and how these can be linked to the fitness industry. If English is your second language you must hold an ESOL Level 1 qualification. A pre-course test will be completed together with an interview.

The YMCA Level 2 Gym Instructing provides an excellent starting point for your career in gym instruction and is widely respected by employers throughout the UK, Ireland and abroad.

A pre-entry requirement for the course is the completion of an initial and diagnostic assessment in English.
