On successful completion of the apprenticeship you will be able to apply for membership to the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPS) to obtain professional recognition and access a range of further CPD and benefits.

What are the entry requirements?

Entry is subject to interview and assessment. You will need to have relevant employment within a health and fitness environment. In addition, you will need to have 4 GCSEs at grade D or grade 4 or higher, including English and Maths or demonstrate ability equivalent to, or exceeding Level 1 in English and Maths.

What does this programme involve?

The Intermediate Apprenticeship in Exercise & Fitness covers the knowledge and competencies required to demonstrate performance within an instructing role. The apprenticeship aims to develop knowledge and understanding of anatomy and physiology for exercise, principles of exercise, fitness and health, how to support clients who take part in exercise and physical activity and health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment. Additionally there are optional units covering a range of fitness specialisms.
On successful completion apprentices will be awarded the Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing & Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Instructing Exercise and Fitness in addition to the Intermediate Apprenticeship in Exercise & Fitness framework certificate. Unless exempt on entry, you will also achieve Level 1 Function Skills qualifications in English and Maths.

How is the programme taught and assessed?

You will learn through a combination of on- and off-the-job training. You will attend college one day per week during term time and spend the rest of your time earning and learning in the workplace.

Apprentices will demonstrate their occupational competence through completion of a work-based portfolio and ongoing assessment.

Your progress will be continuously monitored and supported by an Apprenticeship Achievement Officer.

What else do I need to know?

On successful completion of this Intermediate Level Apprenticeship, learners can progress onto a specialist role in teaching exercise to children, or onto the Advanced Level Apprenticeship in Exercise and Fitness and progress to roles which are more specialist and require greater technical knowledge and skills.

The Intermediate Level Apprenticeship in Exercise and Fitness is designed for people who are already employed in the fitness industry, and for those who want to enter the industry and progress their careers. The aim of this apprenticeship is to supply a highly skilled and vocationally competent workforce for the health and fitness sector to provide a quality service to clients. The health and fitness industry is a large and important component of part of the active leisure, learning and well-being sector and employees are a crucial part of the service ensuring that customers achieve their health and fitness goals.
