What will I be learning?
The Refrigeration Air Conditioning and Heat Pump (RACHP) Engineering Technician is a specialist occupation involved in planning, preparing and safely carrying out work activities in process, product and space cooling.
RACHP Technicians duties an involve the design, installation, routine maintenance, reactive service, commissioning and de-commissioning of Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heat Pump systems. Technicians require a thorough competency in their understanding of the engineering principles of thermodynamics and the vapour compression cycle in order to perform operations.
RACHP Engineering Technicians have important responsibilities for the safety of themselves, work colleagues and the general public as well as minimising the environmental impact of cooling systems.
Why is this course for me?
Apprentices will develop their knowledge, skills and behaviours through on and off-the-job learning and are expected to attend Eastleigh College on a day or block release basis.
As part of the apprenticeship, learners will work towards the Level 2 C&G 6187 NVQ Diploma in Refrigeration/Air Conditioning and the Level 3 City & Guilds 6090 Diploma in Refrigeration, Air Conditioning & Heat Pump Systems.
Apprentices will be certificated for the apprenticeship after completion of an end point assessment.
Whilst on programme, apprentices must achieve Level 2 Certificate in F Gas and ODS Regulations Category 1 and, unless exempt on entry, Level 2 Functional Skills English & Maths before undertaking the end point assessment.
It is expected that it will typically take three years for the apprentice to attain the required level of competence in the workplace and gather sufficient practical experience.
Your progress will be continuously monitored and supported by an Apprenticeship Officer.
What do I need to sign up?
Entry is subject to interview and assessment and you will need to have relevant employment. In addition, you will need to have 4 GCSEs at grade C/4 or higher, including English & Maths or have achieved a relevant Level 2 vocational qualification* and be able to demonstrate ability equivalent to, or exceeding Level 2 in English& Maths.

Is there anything else I need to know?
This standard is designed to meet the professional standards of the Engineering Council for registration as an Engineering Technician (EngTech) in partnership with the Institute of Refrigeration and CIBSE.

World Refrigeration Day is a two week initiative organised by the Institute of Refrigeration (IoR) to put the refrigeration and air conditioning trade and its industry in the world’s spotlight. Eastleigh College learners, past and present, took part in celebrations giving the industry’s tradespeople the recognition they deserve.
