What opportunities will this course give me?
The Skills for Independence full-time course is designed to give you the confidence and knowledge in independent living and work skills.It has been developed for students with a moderate learning disability, and is an excellent entry into multiple progression pathways.
The curriculum includes valuable life skills needed to navigate daily life, including cooking, social emotional skills, independent living skills, managing money and good health and well being. A central theme throughout Supported Learning programmes are employability skills. This will be embedded into learning throughout and is an essential aim for all learners; travel training, till training and enterprise skills are just some of the ways this will be supported.
All learners will have work experience placements related to their area of interest, we have high ambition for learners to attain paid or voluntary work.
What will I be learning?
This is a One year programme for learners with moderate learning disabilities/difficulties. Learners will have the option to progress to an additional year of the programme in discussion with the tutor. Learners will study an Entry 2 programme linked to assessment outcomes for Preparing to get a Job and Independent Living on alternate years of the programme.
The programme is designed to focus on enterprise activity while maintaining the development of English, Maths & IT and personal and social skills.
The programme will cover the following topics:
Catering and Hospitality
Craft Skills
Enterprise skills
Employability Skills
Learners will also participate in a carousel of enrichment activities covering:
Sport/ gym sessions
ICT/ Digital Awareness
Relationships
Volunteering and Community Action
LEGO/ ELSA Wellbeing sessions
Learners will access community work in Eastleigh Town Centre and enterprise activities at our college kiosk. Learners will take part in a non-accredited programme to develop preparation for adulthood themes. Learners will choose their own priorities to work towards Employment, Independent Living, Healthy Living and Community, Friends and Relationships targets. Learners will be encouraged to develop their practical skills alongside developing appropriate business and promotional skills with college sales on main site and in the local community.
Why is this course for me?
You will be taught by lecturers who are experienced in teaching students with learning difficulties. You will also have your own personal tutor who will help you with your personal, social development and direct you to wider college services that you may need.
Classes are a mixture of practical and written work and there will be opportunities to develop, and discover, a range of new skills and opportunities.
You will be able to make use of the community facilities the college and local community offer and make some new friends along the way.
How will my learning be enhanced?
A central theme of the programme focusses on Preparation for Adulthood themes. Learners will develop their own targets against this framework so that learning is bespoke and relevant to individual needs. The curriculum model means that learners input some of the things that they feel are important to their life and learning.
We have an excellent range of community facilities available on our main campus. We also create opportunities to travel to other nearby towns and cities.
Alongside regular course content, learners will also study maths and English skills. In all of lifes stages, these skills are vital and will help secure long-term employment in a variety of job sectors. Improving skills in maths and English will help to develop confidence too.

What do I need to sign up?
This curriculum is designed for students with a learning difficulty and / or disability. The course runs at both Entry 3 and Level One. Following application, successful candidates will be invited to an interview and taster day to support transition. You will need to have or be applying for an Education & Health Care Plan.
This course is only for learners aged 16-18 (or 19-24 with an EHCP)
Is there anything else I need to know?
Learners are in college three days a week. The average college day runs from 9.00 - 3.00pm. The college has a common hour on Wednesdays, all sessions scheduled on a Wednesday will start at 10.00am.
