What career opportunities can this lead to?

On completion of the course students may wish to progress to the Adult Enrichment programmes. All students will be supported to make informed decisions regarding their future progression, including advice on employment opportunities and further training.

What are the entry requirements?

This programme is designed for students with a learning difficulty and / or disability who are over 19 at the start of the course. For learners to be fully funded for the course they will have to have an Education Health and Care Plan and be between the ages of 19 and 24. If you do not meet these criteria please enquire to find out about costs. Following application, successful candidates will be invited to a pre-assessment interview.

What does this programme involve?

This is a One year programme for learners who are aged 19 and above with moderate learning disabilities/difficulties. Learners will study an Entry 2 course called Preparing to get a Job (Laser Qualification). The programme will be taught at our new Hive Centre which is on our Winchester Campus site in Compton, just south of Winchester.
At the end of the first year learners you will have an opportunity to apply for a second year on the programme.

The programme is designed to give a flavour of working on an enterprise activity while maintaining the development of English, Maths & IT and personal and social skills.
The programme will cover the following topics:
Catering and Hospitality
Craft Skills
Enterprise skills
Employability Skills

Learners will be encouraged to develop their practical skills alongside developing appropriate business and promotional skills with college sales on main site.

Embedded within this programme will be team working, assertiveness, confidence building, managing money in relation to working a budget, marketing and advertising. We will be undertaking a range of activities linked to seasonal times of the year to support the development of enterprise projects.

There are times that we explore into the community to collect information for our enterprise products, unfortunately independent travel training is not continued due to the location of the centre.

How is the programme taught and assessed?

Learners will be assessed as the programme progresses and they build up a portfolio of evidence. All assessment will take place in class at the appropriate time.
The classes will be largely practical and there will be lots of opportunities to develop and discover new skills. The programme will be a careful balance of informal and formal teaching, group work and practical sessions in the brand new, fully equipped kitchen, work shop and business suite. Advantage will be taken of the extensive garden at Winchester Campus to develop and nurture horticultural projects.

What else do I need to know?

Teaching hours will be from approximately 9.30am to 3.30pm each day for three days a week. Arrangements for travelling to The Hive will be discussed at the point of application.
