What opportunities will this course give me?
The retail automotive sector employs over 500,000 people with a turnover of 146 billion a year! This programme is suitable for individuals who have a keen interest in the retail motor vehicle industry and who wish to undertake a qualification which will support their progression into the retail motor vehicle industry and to a Level 3 programme such as Level 3 Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, or an Apprenticeship.
As an apprentice automotive technician, you may expect to earn between 7,000 - 13,000, depending on your age and stage of training. Once you are qualified you may expect to earn between 22,000 - 26,000.

This particular course represents a pathway to further progression towards much higher level qualifications that are run by the South Coast Institute of Technology.
The South Coast Institute of Technology is a collaboration of five further education colleges and two universities. We work with well known employers to deliver industry-led courses which fill skills gaps and support the economic growth of the South Coast.
What will I be learning?
Through theory and practical lessons, you will develop the essential knowledge required by the motor vehicle industry.
You will develop your knowledge and skills in:
• Health, safety and good housekeeping
• Materials, fabrication, tools and measuring devices
• Light vehicle engine mechanical, lubrication and cooling systems
• Light vehicle chassis units and components
• Light vehicle electrical units and components
Why is this course for me?
You will be assessed through a combination of:
• workshop based competence tasks and questioning
• written assessments
• external online testing
• Functional Skills assessments in Maths and English
• E-portfolio of evidence to show your competence and understanding of the qualification and skills
The study programme is 12 hours per week for 35 weeks with additional hours for English and maths and students will be expected to complete an additional two hours minimum of self-study each week. The timetable is usually over three days and will include math and English if required.
How will my learning be enhanced?
Programme tutors will arrange visits to industry based events, such as the Motorsport Show.

What do I need to sign up?
You will need 4 GCSEs at Grade 9-3 including English Language and maths or Level 1 Light Vehicle Maintenance, as well as a genuine interest in gaining experience of working in the retail automotive industry.
For internal progression, you should have achieved L1 in the relevant area as well as progressing your GCSE English and mathematics (if below a Grade 4) as well as demonstrating that you have upheld the college values.
You will require an interview with subject specialist staff to ensure you have a good understanding of the course you are applying for. Attendance and attainment reports from previous education will also be required.
Adult learners may apply for any of our full time and apprenticeship programmes and your vocational experience will also be taken into consideration alongside existing qualifications.
The programme is fully funded for learners aged 16-18. Fees may apply for 19+.
Is there anything else I need to know?
You will need to provide suitable overalls and safety boots which must always be worn during all workshop activities, as well as a folder for your learning materials and pens as you will be expected to keep a record of your learning.
For learners aged 19+ the price is upon application only, and after receiving information, advice & guidance.
All learners enrolled on a full-time study programme are expected to attend a compulsory work or industry placement during their course. The number of hours of placement will vary from 35 hours through to 750 hours, this variance is due to the differing types of assessment on each course.
Learners should be aware that this is compulsory part of their study programme and work / industry placements will take place during the college week.
