What opportunities will this course give me?
The retail automotive sector employs over 500,000 people with a turnover of 146 billion a year! Level 3 Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair is suitable for individuals who wish to undertake further study which will support their progression into the retail motor vehicle industry. The successful completion of this programme can lead to an Apprenticeship and possible progression to higher education.
As an apprentice automotive technician, you may expect to earn between 7,000 - 13,000, depending on your age and stage of training. Once qualified, and with the required experience, a master technician can expect to earn in the region of between 25,000 - 45,000. (http://www.autocity.org.uk/world-of-work)
What will I be learning?
Through theory and practical lessons, you will develop the essential knowledge and skills required by the motor vehicle industry. This will include:
• Health, safety and good housekeeping
• Materials, fabrication, tools and measuring devices
• Support for job roles
• Diagnosis and rectification of light vehicle engine faults
• Diagnosis and rectification of vehicle auxiliary electrical faults
• Diagnosis and rectification of light vehicle chassis system faults
• Identify and agree motor vehicle customer service needs
All students studying on this programme will have a period in a local garage workshop and the colleges own MOT station to gain valuable work experience to prepare them for employment.
Programme tutors will arrange visits to industry based events, such as the Motorsport Show.
Why is this course for me?
You will be assessed through a combination of:
• workshop based competence tasks and questioning
• written assessments
• external online testing
• Functional Skills assessments in Maths and English
• E-portfolio of evidence to show your competence and understanding of the qualification and skills
The study programme is 13 hours per week for 35 weeks and students will be expected to complete an additional 10 hours minimum of self-study each week. The timetable is usually over three days with math and English if required.
What do I need to sign up?
You must have a suitable Level 2 automotive qualification, along with a genuine interest in gaining experience of working in the retail automotive industry.
You will need 4 GCSEs at Grade 9-4 including English Language and maths.
For internal progression you will have completed L2 in the relevant vocational area and made positive progress to achieving your GCSE English and Maths (if below Grade 4) as well as demonstrating that you have upheld the college values.
You will require an interview with subject specialist staff to ensure you have a good understanding of the course you are applying for. Attendance and attainment reports from previous education will also be required.
Adult learners may apply for any of our full time and apprenticeship programmes and your vocational experience will also be taken into consideration alongside existing qualifications.
The programme is fully funded for learners aged 16-18.
For learners aged 19+ the price is upon application only, and after receiving information, advice & guidance.
Is there anything else I need to know?
You will need to provide suitable overalls and safety boots which must always be worn during all workshop activities, as well as a folder for your learning materials and pens as you will be expected to keep a record of your learning.
All learners enrolled on a full-time study programme are expected to attend a compulsory work or industry placement during their course. The number of hours of placement will vary from 35 hours through to 750 hours, this variance is due to the differing types of assessment on each course.
Learners should be aware that this is compulsory part of their study programme and work / industry placements will take place during the college week.
