What opportunities will this course give me?

This Higher National Certificate in Illustration is a new and exciting course that focuses both on creative and technical skill building whilst exploring the broad and deep discipline of Illustration. This course will run in collaboration with The University of Portsmouth, closely working with the BA Illustration course.
There will be a strong focus on using digital design software to equip students with the necessary tools as professionals. Enabling, self-reflecting individuals to meet the demands of employers in creative sectors.
The creative and technical abilities in sequential storytelling, character animation and visual storytelling you develop on this course could lead to a variety of creative roles in design and media.

Illustration also gives you the opportunity to develop a career in fashion illustration, fine art printmaking, fine art and other design disciplines. Our dedicated curriculum focuses on drawing skills, making skills and thinking skills, which reflect the basis of most design disciplines.
We have over 20 years experience teaching Diplomas, Extended Diplomas and Foundation Diplomas in Art Design & Creative Media, to both adults and college leavers. All lecturing staff have professional experience in the creative specialisms they deliver and maintain live connections with their personal practice. We are very proud of our excellent purpose built teaching and design studios with superb facilities in light and lofty spaces

When you graduate, you can progress to the second year of BA (Hons) Illustration at the University of Portsmouth, enabling you to finish the degree in two years. You'll also have a variety of employment options in your reach, including many aspects of design and illustration, graphic art, model making, digital publishing, and marketing - or you can even branch into puppetry, textile design, or animation.

What will I be learning?

On this course you'll:
●Explore the disciplines, practices and theories of illustration
●Improve your drawing, printing, digital software and fundamental making skills, over a challenging and varied curriculum
●Enhance your exhibition and presentation skills
●Develop an awareness of professional practices in illustration and beyond through talks by creative professionals
●Be enrolled at both the University of Portsmouth and Eastleigh College, so you'll have access to activities and certain facilities at both locations
●Display a selection of your work at a final exhibition and learn the various ways in which contemporary illustration is disseminated
●Be taught by teaching staff who have professional experience as illustrators and digital media specialists

Enjoy learning to channel your artistic talent and passion into the exciting, fast-paced world of contemporary illustration.

Learners should expect to study 40 hours per week; sectioned up on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with 17 hours of contact teaching within those days, then 20 hours of self-directed study on the remaining days.

Self-Directed Study

This will normally be a mixture of:
• Practical research and skill practice with software.
• Group meetings and working.
• Photography, sketching and modelling.
• Sound and environmental sound recording.
• Reading and writing.

How will my learning be enhanced?

As a learner on this course you will have access to the facilities at both the college and the University of Portsmouth. Guest peakers, live exibitions along with trips and visits will add to your experience of this subject.

What do I need to sign up?

We're looking for students who love drawing, making, thinking and stories, and are fascinated with history and research.
Prior to starting this course students would typically have studied subjects related to Art, Design & Media at Level 3.
To maximise your potential on this course, you should be:

●Able to see the value in experiment and play
●Passionate about creating professional artwork that makes you stand out within the design industry
●A team player and an independent worker
●Keen to meet deadlines and complete set tasks in a creative, dynamic environment

The course is suitable for applicants leaving sixth form and further education colleges, mature students, career changers, and all individuals who wish to continue their studies into levels 4,5 and beyond.

All applicants will be invited for an interview that includes an introduction to the course and the facilities as well as some short assessments to ensure it is the right course for you.

Is there anything else I need to know?

Learners who complete this one-year Collaborative HNC Illustration course will be offered the natural progression to Level 5 BA Illustration at University of Portsmouth. Or an alternative level 5 course they are interested in.
This will enable a completed BA Hons in a specific discipline in Art & Design.
