What opportunities will this course give me?
A career in counselling is both challenging and fulfilling, demanding and invigorating. It is also an industry that continuously needs more and more passionate, skilful applicants. Our DipHE Humanistic Counselling two-year qualification is a brilliant way to welcome new professionals into this world.
Curated in collaboration with University of Portsmouth, this L5 course teaches students how to deliver the humanistic, person-centred counselling modality. Humanism is built on human freedom, dignity and potential.
You will learn how humanistic counselling encourages empathy, warmth and genuineness, promoting clients to tap into their own self-understanding and psychological growth. As well as gaining the practical knowledge and interpersonal skills you need to pursue a career as a humanistic therapist, you may also choose to top up your diploma to a Bachelors degree with our one-year BSc (Hons) Humanistic Counselling course.
This course shares the same first year modules as our DipHE Gestalt Counselling and DipHE Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. As such, you will have the option to switch courses at the end of year one, if you wish.
Why is this course for me?
The two year course starts with an introduction to the broad and multifaceted role of counselling. Students will be taught about the different approaches available to a practitioner so that they can sensibly start to decide which modality is best suited to their skills and personality.
In this first year (Level 4) you will become confident in:
• Development of counselling theory
• Development of counselling skills
• Professional issues for a counselling practitioner
• Personal development
In your second year (Level 5) you will gain a deeper, more detailed awareness of humanistic counselling, including:
• Humanistic counselling theory
• Humanistic counselling skills
• Professional development
• Mental health issues
• Counselling specific clients groups
• Introduction to research methodologies
You will also complete 100 hours of supervised therapy, putting your newly formed knowledge into practice. In addition, youll benefit from a module in research methods and ethics in counselling and psychotherapy; this is preparation for any students hoping to move onto the corresponding BSc (Hons) top up qualification.
How will my learning be enhanced?
The programme has been designed to suit a range of entrants; you will be taught using a mixture of didactic and facilitative methods with an emphasis on experiential and student-centred learning. Throughout the course, you will be engaged in both individual and group activities as well as small research and discussion groups.
You will be required to take part in personal therapy throughout the course, as well as register for British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) membership; both come at an additional cost, with therapy costing anywhere between £30-£70 per hour and BACP membership at £82 per year. Both will enormously benefit and enrich your learning experience, giving you first-hand experience of the world of humanistic counselling.
