What opportunities will this course give me?
You will gain an NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Barbering and be able to apply for work within a barbering shop, or set up your own business - Those learners wishing to study more advanced or specialist techniques can progress onto; face care for men, providing shaving services.
What will I be learning?
The course gives you all the skills required for the men's industry covering:-
• Client Consultation & Diagnosis
• Blow Drying mens hair
• Shampooing & Conditioning Hair and Scalp
• Create basic patterns in hair
• Health & Safety in the Salon
• Cutting mens facial hair
• Promote additional services or products
• Cutting mens hair
You will also learn how to retail products and advise clients on aftercare. As in most salons you will need to be able to promote additional services and products. To enable you to do this we will help you develop promotional and customer service skills. NVQ 2 Diploma in Barbering is an internationally recognised qualification within the hair and beauty industry and will allow you to gain employment within the beauty industry. Your theory and practical work will be continually assessed throughout the course. A portfolio will be built up containing assignments, projects, practical work and tests. The course is a careful balance of theory and practical work. You will be able to gain extra experience in the College salon and reception area.

What do I need to sign up?
You will need 4 GCSEs at Grade 3 including English Language and mathematics.
All learners without a GCSE at grade A*-C or 9-4 in English or Maths will be required, as a condition of the programme, to undertake either a GCSE or Functional Skills programme. Therefore, if you enter a programme with a Grade 3 in English or Maths, you will be required to take English or Maths as well.
For internal progression, you should have achieved L1 in the relevant area as well as progressing your GCSE English and mathematics (if below a Grade 4) as well as demonstrating that you have upheld the college values.
You will require an interview with subject specialist staff to ensure you have a good understanding of the course you are applying for. Attendance and attainment reports from previous education will also be required.
Adult learners may apply for any of our full time and apprenticeship programmes and your vocational experience will also be taken into consideration alongside existing qualifications.
The programme is fully funded for learners aged 16-18. Fees may apply for 19+.
A neat and tidy appearance with a sympathetic nature and desire to help clients is essential.
Is there anything else I need to know?
This course is for learners wishing to achieve and practice barbering skills. Learners do not need any previous qualifications or experience in hairdressing. This is a highly practical course underpinned with the theoretical knowledge required for you to work safely in a salon and understand the basics of hairdressing skills.
The tutors are all professionals with qualifications and experience of the hairdressing industry. They will help you to practice your new skills on each other, on mannequin heads and with clients in our new salons; which are open to the general public as well as staff and students.

All learners enrolled on a full-time study programme are expected to attend a compulsory work or industry placement during their course. The number of hours of placement will vary from 35 hours through to 750 hours, this variance is due to the differing types of assessment on each course.
Learners should be aware that this is compulsory part of their study programme and work / industry placements will take place during the college week.
