What opportunities will this course give me?
Candidates who wish to develop and demonstrate occupational competence in advanced fitness instructing can progress onto the NVQ Level 3 in Instructing Physical Activity and Exercise for People with Disabilities
Candidates may also progress onto qualifications in related sectors, such as Sports Massage, where they will be provided with the knowledge and skills to practise sports massage, alongside personal training in the health club environment or own business
Alternatively, candidates may broaden their knowledge and skills by progressing onto qualifications mapping to additional branches of the Level 3 Standards, such as Exercise Referral and Gym Manager
The qualification will provide knowledge and practical skills to enhance provision alongside other academic courses, such as: National Diploma in Sports Studies, A level PE and HND in Sport and Leisure
What will I be learning?
The course consists of 200 hours (total learning hours), the majority of this will be completed distance study with some assessments taking place in college. The course can be completed at your own speed however it must be fully completed within 9 months of start date.
The course is delivered through google classroom and supported by regular contact from the course administrator. You will learn through reading manuals, powerpoints and completing online worksheets and supplemented by email and telephone support from qualified tutors.
Assessments will take place throughout the course, the majority will take place through your learner assessment record and online via YMCA Mark book which will be completed at home. The practical assessment and theory exam will take place in college at a pre arranged dates.
The aim of this qualification is to recognise the skills, knowledge and competence required for an individual to work unsupervised as a personal trainer. This includes being able to offer one-to-one training, baseline assessment, nutritional advice and progressive programming which is specific to the individual needs of a client.
Learners will cover:
Applied anatomy and physiology
Nutrition and its application to support a clients health
Health and wellbeing
Effective communication through client consultations to encourage long term change
Designing and planning effective personal training sessions for a range of clients in different environments
Executing physical activity session for a range of clients in different environments
Professional practice and legal requirements
Business acumen for working in both employed and self employment
Self evaluation and professional development.
Why is this course for me?
Classes will comprise both theory and practical, with assessment of both your practical, planning skills and the development of underpinning knowledge. Assessment will include internally assessed workbooks, externally marked theory assessment, client case study / profile and observation of practical activity
What do I need to sign up?
You must hold a Level 2 qualification in Fitness / Gym. Knowledge of practical approaches to exercise and fitness is desirable but not essential.
All learners must be willing to take part in physical activity and display confidence when leading an exercise session.
A pre-entry requirement for the course is the completion of an initial and diagnostic assessment in English.
Is there anything else I need to know?
Those with a recognised Level 2 fitness qualification, who are involved in, or employed in, the industry.
• Gym instructors wishing to pursue a career in the health and fitness sector as personal trainers
Pens, paper, basic fitness equipment, access to a gym, computer, internet access, suitable clothing for practical sessions.
