What opportunities will this course give me?
This programme is suitable for those with a keen interest in theoretical and practical engineering disciplines and who wish to pursue a prosperous career as a specialist engineer in various industries including marine, maintenance, automotive or manufacturing.
Following successful completion of the programme, students may progress onto the extended diploma. Students may also gain employment within the engineering industry and there may be a possibility of continuing your studies at the College. The Engineering Diploma also offers students who meet the qualifying entry criteria an opportunity to take an additional qualification in Core maths.(Quantative Reasoning)
A career in Engineering could take you to a vast range of industries, including aerospace, automotive, food and drink, marine, medical, IT, construction, nuclear, or even space. There are opportunities to work as a mechanical, electrical or chemical engineer in most industries, where you could focus on the research and design elements or take a more hands-on approach with manufacturing and maintenance.
What will I be learning?
There are 5 units that are required to be achieved and these consist of two mandatory units
• Engineering and Environmental Health and Safety
• Mechanical Engineering Principles
•
Plus a further three units to make up the required credits for the diploma these could include
• Engineering Communications
• Engineering Mathematics
• Computer Aided Drafting in Engineering
Why is this course for me?
You will learn and develop your skills through a mixture of lessons, demonstrations, assignments and practical tasks in the College workshops. Work experience will be set up for you to gain some valuable experience in industry. Visits to local employers will also be planned.
You will be assessed through internal assignments and externally assessed through exams and assignments. You can achieve a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade.
This programme encourages you to undertake your own research to complete the tasks given to you so that you may produce written assignments. A limited amount of practical training will also be given.
How will my learning be enhanced?
You will have a tutorial session weekly and be supported to find work experience in the engineering sector, alongside visits and support for applications to university
What do I need to sign up?
Entry requirements are a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade A*-C / 9-5 including English, Maths and Science. Other relevant Level 2 qualifications and Diplomas may also be considered. Students should also have a good attendance report from school and complete a successful interview.
Is there anything else I need to know?
You will need to provide suitable overalls and safety shoes for the programme and these must always be worn during practical activities in the workshops to ensure safety is maintained. You will also need to provide yourself with pens, pencils paper and a lever-arch folder for your notes.

Eastleigh College has launched a new range of courses called ‘Bounce Back Technical and Professional Qualifications’ to support 18 and 19-year-olds find work in targeted high-demand sectors like engineering, construction, and social care. These courses are free to applicants as part of the measures announced on 8 July in the Chancellor’s ‘Plan for Jobs’ boost for the post-Covid future.
