What opportunities will this course give me?

This programme is suitable for those with a keen interest in theoretical and practical engineering disciplines and who wish to pursue a prosperous career as a specialist engineer in various industries including marine, maintenance, automotive or manufacturing.

Following successful completion of the programme, students may either progress onto our part-time HNC in Engineering or other Higher Education and we have contact with several local universities offering relevant courses. Students may also gain employment within the engineering industry and there may be a possibility of continuing your studies at the College. The programme can carry up to a maximum of 168 UCAS points equivalent to four A levels. The Engineering Diploma also offers students who meet the qualifying entry criteria an opportunity to take an additional qualification in Core maths and EPQ and achieve a recognised and valued Technical Baccalaureate.

A career in Engineering could take you to a vast range of industries, including aerospace, automotive, food and drink, marine, medical, IT, construction, nuclear, or even space. There are opportunities to work as a mechanical, electrical or chemical engineer in most industries, where you could focus on the research and design elements or take a more hands-on approach with manufacturing and maintenance.

What will I be learning?

There are eighteen units to complete that cover a diverse range of subject areas such as Mechanical Principles, Electrical and Electronic Principles, and Computer Aided Design (CAD). The qualification is delivered through a variety of theoretical type learning (classroom based) and may also involve the use of virtual reality type interactive equipment and specialist workshop equipment to complete assignments and project based study.

Year 1 - Units for 90 credit Diploma in Engineering
Year 2 - Units for Full Extended Diploma in Engineering with options to specialise in mechanical or electrical engineering.

You will study the following five core units over the two years:
- Health and Safety
- Communications for Technicians
- Project (two units)
- Mathematics for Technicians
- Mechanical Principles
- Electrical and Electronic Principles

An additional twelve units need to be selected from a list that includes:
- Engineering Drawing for Technicians
- Computer Aided Drafting in Engineering
- Principles and Applications of Electronic Devices and Circuits
- Features and Applications of Electrical Machines
- Industrial Robot Technologies

Why is this course for me?

You will learn and develop your skills through a mixture of lessons, demonstrations, assignments and practical tasks in the College workshops. Work experience will be set up for you to gain some valuable experience in industry. Visits to local employers will also be planned.

You will be assessed through internal assignments and externally assessed through exams and assignments. You can achieve a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade.

This programme encourages you to undertake your own research to complete the tasks given to you so that you may produce written assignments. A limited amount of practical training will also be given.

What do I need to sign up?

Entry requirements are a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade A*-C / 9-5 including English, Maths and Science. Other relevant Level 2 qualifications and Diplomas may also be considered. Students should also have a good attendance report from school and complete a successful interview.

Is there anything else I need to know?

You will need to provide suitable overalls and safety shoes for the programme and these must always be worn during practical activities in the workshops to ensure safety is maintained. You will also need to provide yourself with pens, pencils paper and a lever-arch folder for your notes. Technical drawing instruments and a calculator will also need to be purchased within the first term to be able to complete all the aspects of the programme - these can be purchased through the College.
