This course provides excellent preparation towards professional membership and more importantly Employment as a Senior Technician in mechanical/electrical/electronic engineering in a variety of job roles and functions.
A career in Engineering could take you to a vast range of industries, including aerospace, automotive, food and drink, marine, medical, IT, construction, nuclear, or even space. There are opportunities to work as a mechanical, electrical or chemical engineer in most industries, where you could focus on the research and design elements or take a more hands-on approach with manufacturing and maintenance.
For learners who have recently been in education, the entry profile is likely to include one of the following:
- have completed an Advanced Engineering Apprenticeship or a BTEC Level 3 qualification in engineering
- other related level 3 qualifications - A or AS levels in Science, Technology Engineering or Mathematics subjects and GCSEs in English, Maths, and Science - at grade C / 4 or above
- have related work experience or employment in engineering at Level 3
Note: You will have to be employed in a related skill area.
Your progress will be monitored by an Apprenticeship Officer.
Due to the current national reform of apprenticeships, the information detailed for this programme is subject to change. From Autumn 2018, apprenticeships may be delivered as a newly developed standard; details of these will be updated on our website as soon as the information is released. To discuss further, please contact the Apprenticeship Experts on 02380 911226
You will complete the following qualifications though work-based and off the job training:
- Level 4 NVQ Extended Diploma in Engineering (QCF)
- Level 4 HNC Diploma in Engineering (QCF)
In order to get the best out of studying at this level you will need commitment, discipline and initiative. Study techniques such as:
- time management
- advanced research techniques
- assessing the validity of a source
- will be essential to your success.
Whilst on the job you will be mentored and guided to ensure you learn the skills required from the company you work for. Your NVQ work will be assessed by an Assessor from the College over the Apprenticeship duration.
The BTEC Higher National is assessed through a range of different methods, which may combine report writing, practical demonstrations, presentations and producing finished products. BTECs are hands-on vocational qualifications, and so you should expect your assessments to mirror the kind of work you would be completing in the Engineering sector.
Your tutor will set assignments for the qualification. Each assignment will include a set of assessment criteria that you must achieve in order to pass the assignment. In addition, there are opportunities to stretch yourself and achieve higher grades - Merit / Distinction.

Production Technician - Supervise and provide technical guidance to quality inspectors and junior engineering staff. Provide technical support to production and assist with product development. Solve technical issues within company and sub-contactors, suppliers and customers.
Mechanical Systems Technician - Apply scientific and mathematical principles to the design, manufacture and operation of efficient machines, processes and systems.
Quality Technician - Develop and define project quality programme and plans, ensure continuous and effective operation of project quality performance and plans, perform project quality assurance auditing of contractors and suppliers.
