What opportunities will this course give me?
This programme is suitable for those with a keen interest in theoretical and practical engineering disciplines and who wish to pursue a prosperous career as a specialist engineer in various industries including marine, maintenance, automotive or manufacturing.
Following successful completion of the programme, students may progress onto Higher Education. Students may also gain employment within the engineering industry and there may be a possibility of continuing your studies at the College through an Apprenticeship or HNC. The Level 3 Technical Extended Diploma in Engineering also offers students who meet the qualifying entry criteria an opportunity to take an additional qualification in Core Maths.(Quantitative Reasoning).

This particular course represents a pathway to further progression towards much higher level qualifications that are run by the South Coast Institute of Technology.
The South Coast Institute of Technology is a collaboration of five further education colleges and two universities. We work with well known employers to deliver industry-led courses which fill skills gaps and support the economic growth of the South Coast.

What will I be learning?
There are 7 units that are required to be achieved in the first year, including:
• Engineering and Environmental Health and Safety
• Mechanical Engineering Principles
• Engineering Communications
• Engineering Mathematics
• Computer Aided Drafting in Engineering
• Engineering Design Process
Plus a further unit to be determined.
In the second year, a further 7 units are to be completed, including:
• Further Engineering Mathematics
• Advanced Engineering Project
• Further Engineering Science
• Maintenance Engineering Principles
• Engineering Organisational Efficiency and Improvement
Plus two further units to be determined.
Why is this course for me?
You will learn and develop your skills through a mixture of lessons, demonstrations, assignments and practical tasks in the College workshops. You will be supported to find work experience, in order for you to gain some valuable experience in industry. Visits to local employers will also be planned.
You will be assessed through exams and assignments (both written and practical). You can achieve a Pass (48 UCAS Points), Merit (96 UCAS Points), Distinction (144 UCAS Points) or Distinction* grade (168 UCAS Points).
This programme encourages you to undertake your own research to complete the tasks given to you, so that you may produce written assignments. A limited amount of practical training will also be given.
How will my learning be enhanced?
You will have a tutorial session weekly and be supported to find work experience in the engineering sector, alongside visits and support for applications to university
Why is Eastleigh College my best choice?
At Eastleigh we have lecturers with significant industry experience, a brand new workshop containing new lathes and milling machines, two industry standard 3D printers, and a modern computer suite with Autodesk Inventor (3D) and AutoCAD (2D) CAD packages installed on all PCs.
Students will also be given a student licence to download and use this software on their home PC.

What do I need to sign up?
You will need 5 GCSEs at Grade 9-4 including English Language, Maths and Science.
You will require an interview with subject specialist staff to ensure you have a good understanding of the course you are applying for. Attendance and attainment reports from previous education will also be required.
For internal progression it is expected that you will have achieved a minimum of a Pass at Level 2 and made positive progress to achieving your GCSE English and Maths (if below Grade 4) as well as demonstrating that you have upheld College values.
Adult learners may apply for any of our full time and apprenticeship programmes and your vocational experience will also be taken into consideration alongside existing qualifications.
The programme is fully funded for learners aged 16-18. Fees may apply for 19+.
Is there anything else I need to know?
You will need to provide suitable overalls and safety shoes for the programme and these must always be worn during practical activities in the workshops to ensure safety is maintained. You will also need to provide yourself with pens, pencils, a scientific calculator, and a folder for your notes.

All learners enrolled on a full-time study programme are expected to attend a compulsory work or industry placement during their course. The number of hours of placement will vary from 35 hours through to 750 hours, this variance is due to the differing types of assessment on each course.
Learners should be aware that this is compulsory part of their study programme and work / industry placements will take place during the college week.

New courses launched to re-train 18-19s for high-demand work
Eastleigh College has launched a new range of courses called ‘Bounce Back Technical and Professional Qualifications’ to support 18 and 19-year-olds find work in targeted high-demand sectors like engineering, construction, and social care. These courses are free to applicants as part of the measures announced on 8 July in the Chancellor’s ‘Plan for Jobs’ boost for the post-Covid future. The College is now taking applications for the new courses.
