What opportunities will this course give me?
This programme will equip you with an excellent understanding of the construction and built environment sector. It is equivalent to 3 A Levels.
Following successful completion, students may progress onto Higher Education or study at degree level. Alternatively students can continue with a professional Apprenticeship.
For students wishing to go straight into employment, there is the opportunity to continue to study an HNC, part-time at Eastleigh College. Many students have gained employment with local authorities and building control in a role such as an architect, building surveyor, quantity surveyor, project manager, civil engineer and structural engineer. Salaries can start at 20,000 for a trainee, rising to 60,000 as a qualified professional.
Students have recently gained employment at Mace, Mansells, Barratts, Blanchard Wells, SC4, Eastleigh Borough Council, Hampshire County Council, New Forest District Council and Trant.
What will I be learning?
This full-time programme is run over three days per week, and will require some additional work outside of College hours. 35 hours of work experience in the industry will be included in the programme.
You will have the opportunity to study the following units over two years:
Construction Principles
Construction Design
Tendering and Estimating
Construction Technology
Health and Safety in construction
Surveying in construction
Graphical detailing in construction
Building Regulations and Control in construction
Management of a construction project
Building Surveying in construction
Site engineering for construction
Provision of primary services in buildings
Further mathematics for construction
Project in construction
Conservation, adaptation and maintenance of buildings
Site visits will take place over the duration of the programme, and guest speakers from industry often come to the classes.
Why is this course for me?
The programme consists of assignments and three externally set examinations. You will undertake work experience which is regarded as an important part of the programme and students will undergo a week long placement in each year of their study.
Assessment is continuous throughout the programme, through assignments and coursework.
What do I need to sign up?
You will need 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 or higher including English Language and mathematics.
You will require an interview with subject specialist staff to ensure you have a good understanding of the course you are applying for. Attendance and attainment reports from previous education will also be required.
Adult learners may apply for any of our full time and apprenticeship programmes and your vocational experience will also be taken into consideration alongside existing qualifications.
The programme is fully funded for learners aged 16-18. Fees may apply for 19+.
This two year programme offers progression from the Subsidiary Diploma through to the Extended Diploma, dependent on your entry grades and achievement in year one.
Is there anything else I need to know?
Additional costs incurred for the programme include the purchase of a text book (approximately 25), an electronic scientific calculator, a scale rule and safety boots for site visits.
The programme is fully funded for learners aged 16-18.
For learners aged 19+ the price is upon application only, and after receiving information, advice & guidance.
All learners enrolled on a full-time study programme are expected to attend a compulsory work or industry placement during their course. The number of hours of placement will vary from 35 hours through to 750 hours, this variance is due to the differing types of assessment on each course.
Learners should be aware that this is compulsory part of their study programme and work / industry placements will take place during the college week.
