What opportunities will this course give me?
This Higher National Diploma in Creative Media and Technology is a new and exciting course that focuses both on the creative and technical side of digital media to develop students as professional, self-reflecting individuals able to meet the demands of employers in creative sectors such as Animation, Games and Film, and adapt to a constantly changing world.
We have over 15 years experience delivering Higher Nationals in both Computing and Creative Media to both adults and college leavers. All lecturing staff have practical professional experience in the subjects they deliver and maintain good working contacts with industry. We enjoy a friendly, professional and well-equipped environment where freedom of expression is encouraged, and access is given to all of the tools required to succeed.
Learners that study this subject will be equipped to be adaptable and help shape the future of the creative industries, placing themselves as not only doers but decision makers within their chosen profession. Graduates will be contributing to future entertainment and media via their practice, be that independently or in employment.
Students are highly encouraged and supported to take an additional year at level 6 to gain their bachelors degree, which would further increase prospects of employment and could lead to opportunities for further study at MSc or even PhD. Job roles in industry are always changing, but the students might chose to aim for 3D modeller, animator, web designer, Video editor, CGI artist, games programmer or architectural visualiser.
Local media and game studios regularly offer opportunities for both paid and voluntary work. Students are encouraged and supported in seeking work experience, either for the summer or one day a week for several weeks. Recent examples include working with flight simulator artists and fire brigade training simulators.
What will I be learning?
Studies include:- 3D modelling for games and animation using industry-standard software, video editing and post-production. Programming using C++ and C#, web design, concept art production, group project management, business development, plus opportunities to use modern game engines such as Unreal and Unity.
The Modules for the first year (Level 4) are as follows, they are all 20 credit modules.
• Genre Analysis
• Audio-Visual Production for Media
• Foundations of 3D Graphics
• Concept Art
• Team Development Project
• Introduction to Programming
The modules for the second year are as follows:
• Business Enterprise
• Rapid Prototyping
• Intermediate Programming
• Asset production
Plus the Option of one of the following.
• Architectural Visualisation
Why is this course for me?
Teaching is conducted primarily through practical demonstration and experimentation, supported with lectures, and visits from guest speakers. Selected demonstrations are available as podcast or screencast via the VLE.
Learners should expect to study 15 hours per week scheduled activity with 10 hours of lab time and 15 hours of self-directed study.
Self Directed Study
This will normally be a mixture of:
• Practical research and skill practice with software.
• Group meetings and working.
• Photography, sketching and modelling.
• Sound and environmental sound recording.
• Reading and writing.
What do I need to sign up?
Prior to starting this course students would typically have studied subjects related to creative media and technology, for example art, design, computing, music, and engineering. The course is suitable for students leaving sixth form and further education colleges who wish to continue studies into levels 4,5 and beyond. Alternatively, we would very much welcome applications from experienced individuals with industry backgrounds.
All applicants will be invited for an interview that includes an introduction to the course and the facilities as well as some short assessments to ensure it is the right course for you.
Is there anything else I need to know?
Learners who complete this course should seriously consider a further year at Level 6 to gain a full qualification at degree level.
