What opportunities will this course give me?
A Level 2 Certificate in Care gives learners the opportunity to gain employment in a range of jobs in the care , health and social care sector. Previous learners have progressed on to employment as care assistants, health care assistants or work in child care settings.
This qualification also supports progression onto various apprenticeships or a full-time Level 3 Health and Social Care or Level 3 Early Years qualification.
What will I be learning?
You will study core subject areas in health and social care to support progression to further learning or the work place. There is an Early Years element into the CAFD programme as students can choose an Early Years work placement for one day per week and they can also refer to this experience when writing assignments.
The mandatory units include:
• Equality, diversity and rights in health and social care
• Human growth and development
• Safeguarding and protection in health and social care.
These 3 units for CAFD all overlap with Early Years as core themes:
You will be required to undertake work experience for one day a week in a vocationally relevant environment, which may include care homes, special schools and childcare settings. You will also have the opportunity to gain an Emergency First Aid Certificate to enhance your skills and employability.
English and maths GCSEs will be studied by learners who have not previously achieved these subjects.
Why is this course for me?
You will have on-going written assessments which are internally assessed. You will attend a work placement for one day per week.
What do I need to sign up?
You will require 4 GCSEs at grades A*- D / 9-3 including a minimum grade D / 3 in English and maths. You should be organised, have excellent communication skills and be confident to work alongside others and use your own initiative. You should also have good attainment and attendance reports from your previous school or college and have a successful college interview.
Is there anything else I need to know?
For any work experience placements you will need to provide suitable clothing and footwear, and manage your own travel costs. Learners are required to purchase their own study equipment such as stationery, a USB memory stick and a course textbook.
There is a mandatory requirement for learners to have a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check in order to attend work placement. The DBS application and associated ID evidence must be processed by October half term for learners to continue further with their course.
The CAFD course is graded (D-A*) and an A/A* learner could progress onto either L3 EY or H&SC, provided they have achieved English and maths and tick other boxes (attendance, behaviour etc.) Those who do not achieve English & Maths can progress to a L2 Early Years Apprenticeship.
