What opportunities will this course give me?
Completion of this qualification will enable learners to register with the General Dental Council and find employment as a Dental Nurse. Learners may then progress to qualifications in the following areas
• Dental sedation
• Dental radiography
• Dental technology
• Oral health education
• Special care dental nursing
• Orthodontic nursing
• Dental practice management
With additional entry requirements Dental Nursing can lead to other career pathways including
Dental Therapist, Dental Hygienist, Orthodontic Therapist, Laboratory Technician, Senior Nurse, Practice Manager, Lecturer and Teacher and Assessor of Dental Students.
What will I be learning?
This qualification focuses on direct chair-side work and support during a range of dental treatments. It encompasses the underpinning ethics, professionalism, teamwork and communication required to work as a Dental Nurse. Methods of teaching will include lectures, small and large group work and independent research, demonstration of practical skills in our mock surgery as well as experience in the workplace.
Why is this course for me?
Assessment of this qualification includes observations of practical skills in the workplace, external online assessments, projects and work products. All learners are required to be in employment as a trainee dental nurse for a minimum of 16 hours per week.
What do I need to sign up?
Learners need to be at least 16 years old.
You will require GCSEs at grade A*- C/9-4 including English or successful completion of a Level 2 qualification at a high grade.
You will need to undertake an interview in college demonstrating interest and commitment to study. Learners may also be required to complete a selection task based on the roles and responsibilities of a dental nurse.
A pre-entry requirement for the course is the completion of an initial and diagnostic assessment in English.
Is there anything else I need to know?
Students are required to provide their own stationery and memory stick.
