Hair & Beauty Level 1

What opportunities will this course give me?

This is an approved qualification for learners who wish to progress onto a Level 2 in hair or beauty. It provides a sound platform for learning and training for those learners that didn't meet the entry requirements for a level 2 programme. The qualification will provide the requisite knowledge, understanding which will enable progression to future courses within the hair and beauty sector.

You will develop knowledge of the hair and beauty sector and the different industries that have links to them. You will develop working patterns which will help you with future employment. You will also develop your knowledge on health and safety requirements and customer service skills. This will prepare you in your future career journey.

What will I be learning?

You will learn how to create a hair and beauty image using colour, shampoo and condition the hair and scalp. You will develop blow drying skills whilst developing knowledge of tools, products and equipment. Winding skills using rollers and variety of equipment will also be learned. Plaiting and twisting will also complement this course.

Beauty elements will consist of nail art, using tools and equipment to develop your skills, providing skin care treatments and being confident with skin care products and equipment used, providing hand and nail care and foot and toenail care.

You will be supervised by experienced technical staff and assessed on your competence. Together with your assessor, you will build a portfolio that will be a mix of theoretical evidence, and practical observations. It must show achievement of all learning outcomes, assessment criteria and range as set out by the awarding body.

Assessments are through observations, witness statements, audio-visual media, written questions, oral questions, assignments and case studies.

Attendance in the College per week is 11 hours for your vocational programme inclusive of English and maths. It is expected that you will complete some of the theoretical evidence and where possible practise the practical elements at home

All students without an A*-C grade in English or Maths will be required, as a condition of the programme, to undertake either a GCSE or Functional Skills programme.

Why is this course for me?

You will mainly learn through practical demonstrations, completing tasks on your head block and working in the Colleges salons. There will be a dedicated theory session to ensure you gain all the knowledge outcomes required. Tutorial sessions are designed to track your progress. You will also have the opportunity to take part in trips to trade shows and short industry-based courses.

On completion of Level 2, you will be interviewed and trade tested to check suitability of progression to Level 3. Your attendance and behaviour will also be a deciding factor towards your progression options.

How will my learning be enhanced?

There are many opportunities to visit salons, spas, and exhibitions. Alongside this the college hosts an industry week where all learners can take part in additional skills away from their programme. Additional fees may apply.

These are all available to you when starting your Hair and Beauty career journey.

What do I need to sign up?

The minimum age of enrolment is 16 years. A neat and tidy appearance with a sympathetic nature and desire to help clients is essential.

You will need 3 GCSEs at Grade 9-2 including English Language and maths.

All learners without a GCSE at grade A*-C or 9-4 in English or Maths will be required, as a condition of the programme, to undertake either a GCSE or Functional Skills programme. Therefore, if you enter a programme with a Grade 3 in English or Maths, you will be required to take English or Maths as well.

You may be asked to undertake a numeracy or literacy test such as BKSB.

You will require an interview with subject specialist staff to ensure you have a good understanding of the course you are applying for. Attendance and attainment reports from previous education will also be required.

Adult learners may apply for any of our full time and apprenticeship programmes and your vocational experience will also be taken into consideration alongside existing qualifications.

The programme is fully funded for learners aged 16-18.
For learners aged 19+ the price is upon application only, and after receiving information, advice & guidance.

On completion of Level 1, you will be interviewed to check suitability of progression to Level 2. Your attendance and behaviour will also be a deciding factor towards your progression as well as demonstrating that you have upheld the college values.

Is there anything else I need to know?

Duration: one year

You are required to wear a uniform for practical sessions; this is a tunic with black trousers and flat shoes. The College will provide you with details about where you can purchase this.

A basic kit of tools is also required to allow you to practice at home and in College. Tools and equipment will be supplied by the college for your use.

Additionally, fees may be charged for trips or industry qualifications offered during Industry Week.

Access to email and a PC at home is advisable.

Once you are qualified to a level 3 you can become a state registered hairdresser.

For the first lesson: you will require paper, pens/pencils. Access to a camera is required to produce evidence for assignments.

All learners enrolled on a full-time study programme are expected to attend a compulsory work or industry placement during their course. The number of hours of placement will vary from 35 hours through to 750 hours, this variance is due to the differing types of assessment on each course.

Learners should be aware that this is compulsory part of their study programme and work / industry placements will take place during the college week.
