Completion of the Professional Accounting/Tax Technician Apprenticeship may lead to the candidate receiving credits towards the completion of the Professional Accountant/Tax Apprenticeship or Chartered Accountancy/Taxation qualifications provided by the relevant Professional Bodies. Completion of the Professional Accounting/Tax Technician Apprenticeship may also result in credits being awarded towards relevant undergraduate degree programmes.
Entry is subject to interview and assessment and you will need to have relevant employment. In addition, you will need to have 4 GCSEs at grade C/4 or higher, including English & Maths or be able to demonstrate ability equivalent to, or exceeding Level 2 in English & Maths.

Professional Accounting/Tax Technician will have responsibility for creating, and / or verifying and reviewing, accurate and timely financial information within the organisation in which they are employed or on behalf of another organisation. This will be performed in order to meet relevant ethical, professional and legal standards, and will utilise the individuals knowledge of the business systems and processes, as well as standard accounting and tax practices. This role may exist in an accounting practice, a professional services company, HMRC or the accounting function of a business or other organisation.
This occupation covers two areas of specialism:
The apprenticeship standard covers the core skills, knowledge and behaviours to demonstrate competency of an Professional Accounting/Tax Technician and covers key requirements to include:
- Business Awareness
- Ethical Standards
- Regulation and Compliance
- Systems and Processes
Additionally, apprentices will cover additional content to develop pathway specific skills to include:
- Financial statements for limited companies
- Management accounting
- Internal controls
And 2 optional units from the following:
- Credit management
- Cash and treasury management
- External auditing
- Personal tax
- Business tax
Apprentices will develop through on and off-the-job learning and are expected to attend Eastleigh College on a day release basis and on successful completion of an end point assessment, will achieve a L4 qualification related to Professional Accounting/Tax Technician. Additionally, unless exempt on entry, apprentices will be required to achieve Level 2 Functional Skills in English & Maths and take the test at Level 2 prior to undertaking end point assessment. The typical duration of this apprenticeship is expected to be 24 months. Your progress will be continuously monitored and supported by an Apprenticeship Officer.
On successful completion, individuals may register with one of a number of UK Professional Bodies in this sector to include ACCE, CIMA, CIPFA or ICAEW.
