Why is this course for me?
Makaton is one of the most used and widely known sign and symbol language systems in the field of learning disability and communication needs. The best way to learn Makaton is in a live class from a live Tutor. During this 8-week course you will have weekly opportunities to learn and revise your signs and symbols. You will gain confidence in your Makaton skills as you get support for your Makaton related challenges, learn alongside other like-minded people, and receive feedback on your signing and symbol work from our experienced Makaton Tutor.
At Eastleigh College we have chosen to offer the Makaton Levels 3 and 4 Combined over 8 weeks of 2-hour lessons. During the 8 weeks of the course you will grow and consolidate your skills over this extended period. You will be given lots of opportunities to practise your new skills in class with your peers, as well as being given ideas for practice between lessons to support you in your interactions with Makaton Users.
How will my learning be enhanced?
The Makaton Tutor at Eastleigh College first trained in 2002 and has been teaching Makaton for 20 years, and at Eastleigh College for the last 12 years. Alongside teaching Makaton, she had worked in a number of different Early Years settings, supported young adults in residential care and led baby signing sessions. Over this time, she has gained a great deal of insight both using and teaching Makaton with differing groups of people, including using Makaton with people who have lost their verbal communication skills through stroke and dementia. Now semi retired, she continues to provide Makaton courses and specialised Makaton support to individuals, families and settings.
