What opportunities will this course give me?
Italian is a rich, lyrical language, adored by people around the world. If you've always dreamt of learning the language for yourself, our Italian Beginners programme could be the perfect course for you!
This is a relaxed paced course ideal for beginners from all walks of life; there are no exams to worry about and all levels of experience are welcome. You may want to brush up on old skills or kick start an entirely new one ....
Whatever your position, all that is needed is an enthusiastic nature and a willingness to learn.
On successful completion of the course, you will typically be at A2 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework for Languages). These are guidelines that are used by employers and educational institutions to assess an individual's language skills and ability.
At this level, you will be confident in:
• Understanding frequently used expressions in areas such as shopping, family and employment.
• Completing routine tasks and engaging in a direct exchange of information.
• Describing matters of immediate need in simple terms.
• Dealing with travel situations.
• Writing simple texts on topics of personal interest.
• Understanding points regarding family, work, school or leisure.
Upon successful completion of Italian Beginners Term 1 and Term 2, learners will be able to progress on to the Italian Year 2 course.
What will I be learning?
Lessons are held in a relaxed atmosphere. Students learn to cope in a variety of everyday situations commonly encountered on visits to Italy, such as asking the way, shopping for food and talking about yourself. You will also learn something about the life and culture - all of which will be useful when you travel to Italy.
Term 1 (September): For learners who are complete beginners and have no previous experience of the Italian language
Term 2 (January): For learners who have studied a little Italian language previously, can conjugate basic verbs in the present tense, form simple sentences and know vocabulary for everyday situations.
If you are unsure of your level of ability, please contact the Adult & Community Learning Team on 023 8091 1270 for advice.
A College Certificate will be awarded on request and successful completion of the course.
Why is this course for me?
The Italian Beginners course is taught by a native speaker with a vast level of experience teaching Italian to adults. She is incredibly passionate about the subject and that enthusiasm shines through in her lessons.
However, it is important to remember that since this is a leisure course, the motivation to learn will ultimately come from the learner. For those wishing to get the most out of the course, we recommend one hour of study time per week; we will encourage you to find a way to practice at your own pace and style outside of the classroom.
The topics covered are varied, offering an enriching learning experience and the programme can be adjusted to suit the learner needs and interests. We strive to keep our leisure courses flexible and Italian Beginners is no exception.
How will my learning be enhanced?
Italian for Beginners is a stress free course with no formal assessments to contend with. You will be advised of any interesting opportunities outside of the classroom to deepen your understanding of the language. This could be anything from conversation clubs, to film shows and local initiatives. We believe exposure to the language is invaluable and something we will support you on, every step of the way.
What do I need to sign up?
There are no formal entry requirements in respect of this course; term 1 is suitable for those learners with no knowledge of Italian, and term 2 for those learners with some basic prior knowledge.
Is there anything else I need to know?
Please bring a pen, notebook or ring binder to your classes.
The tutor will advise on a course book during the first session; you will be responsible for the cost of purchasing this.
