What opportunities will this course give me?
For some learners this course will provide a basis for further study or a move into working with local societies on their volunteering programmes as well as stimulating an interest in the wider subject.
What will I be learning?
This course looks at all aspects of UK and World Archaeology including practical aspects, recent finds, research and developments. It will have one core subject per term which will deepen your knowledge of a particular aspect of the broad subject that is archaeology.
In the summer term 2021 we will be covering connections between societies in the Ancient Mediterranean: we will discuss how connections between societies can be traced and how cultural interaction affects social changes.
In the autumn term starting September 2022 we will be covering methodologies in archaeology, with a background in the history of the discipline.
A college certificate will be awarded on request.
Why is this course for me?
You will learn by looking at examples of new and old archaeological research from across the world, examining the projected theories and looking at alternatives.
The tutor is a Greek-Italian archaeologist, who has specialised in the study of pottery making and technology. Currently completing her PhD in Archaeology at the University of Genoa, the tutor has worked on a number of excavations in Italy and Greece, dating from prehistory to Medieval times.
The tutor studies the connections between technological changes and social and cultural transformations. She is also interested in the application of new technologies in Archaeology.
How will my learning be enhanced?
As this is a leisure course, the motivation to learn will ultimately come from the learner. For those wishing to get the most out of the course, we will encourage you to research archaeological topics and news outside of the classroom and share with the rest of the group.
The topics covered are varied and offer an enriching learning experience.
