What will I be learning?
You will have the opportunity to make your own displays under the guidance of a qualified tutor. During this course, you will learn how to make displays that can be used for a wide array of events, such as weddings, birthdays, baby showers, parties, and festivals.
This short course will give you the opportunity to create:
A Floral Headband
A Foliage Garland
A Floral Hoop
A Floral Arch
A range of designs, both traditional and contemporary, will be taught, and a selection of materials will be incorporated throughout the course using some preserved and dried items, as well as fresh flowers and foliage.
Why is this course for me?
Learners will gain confidence through hands on experience of creating the designs, along with developing skills in conditioning materials and tips on using colour and textures.
This is a leisure course and does not lead to a qualification. However, a college certificate will be issued upon completion of the course.
The course is run on the mentality of learning by doing, and so it's perfect for learners who prefer a practical approach to their studies. You'll leave having ignited a passion for the delicate art of floral design. You will learn through demonstrations, discussions, observation and practice.
How will my learning be enhanced?
While you will not gain a professional qualification on this course, this is a great introduction to the world of floristry. You will have the opportunity to explore and be creative with your materials, learning in an environment with other enthusiastic and like-minded individuals.
The tutor has over 15 years experience in floristry and runs her own business - Hummingbird Creations in Hedge End. She is passionate about passing on her skills and promoting sustainable floristry that is accessible to all.
What do I need to sign up?
There are no formal entry requirements in respect of this course. All beginners or those learners with some knowledge most welcome.
Is there anything else I need to know?
This course is suitable for anyone interested in learning the skills to create sustainable and beautiful displays, using seasonal materials, and will be suitable for both beginners and those wishing to develop their floral knowledge and skills further.
Learners will be notified approximately 7-10 days before the course start date what items will be required for the first week and the design which will be demonstrated.
A basic floristry toolbox will be required consisting of multipurpose floristry scissors, Sellotape and dispenser, a bucket, apron, and stapler. The tutor will discuss this with you at the first class.
Some materials will be provided for your course. However, you will need to provide your own flowers each week. The approximate cost of this would be £10-£20 each week, but all additional costs and the amount spent is purely at the students discretion. Economy is always encouraged, and you are able to use a range of materials (fresh, artificial, preserved), as well as using flowers from your own garden if applicable. Some displays may be able to be deconstructed and the materials used the following week should you wish.
We would recommend that you purchase your flowers for the first session a few days in advance and from a local florist. You will then gain the experience of choosing from a more comprehensive range, and where single stem items are usually available at a competitive price. Once you have started the course, your tutor would be happy to recommend local wholesalers who will supply direct to the general public.
