Join us on Saturday 12 March for our Community Learning Open Day and take part in an exciting range of free workshops as part of our Adult Community Learning programme.

In these workshops you will discover or develop new skills, meet new people and have fun. All workshops will be free to adult learners aged 18 and over and will include all materials/ingredients on the day.  There is no limit to how many workshops you can sign up to on the day.  Spaces are limited so we do recommend booking as soon as possible.

Free workshops:

Buttercream Flowers for Cupcake Decorating - 9.30am to 10.45am

In this workshop learn how to make different buttercream flowers including a small rose and hydrangeas to decorate your cupcake which you can take home.

Creative Writing Introduction - 9.30am to 11.30am

Get started in Creative Writing regardless of your experience level. The session will look at some of the key-pillars of storytelling, as well as give you an opportunity to put pen to paper and privately experiment with some writing. 

Introduction to Drawing - 9.30am to 10.30am

Have fun drawing and learning new shading techniques.

Photography. Take Better Pictures on your Phone or Camera - 9.30am to 10.30am

What makes an interesting photo? Come to this hands-on session, bring your camera or phone and experiment with some new ideas for taking pictures.

Improve the Condition of Your Skin 9.30am to 10.30am

We will be looking at different skin conditions/types, with a simple guide into a 3 step process to look after your skin.  We will also be looking into simple and affordable tips to start your new skin journey.

Archaeology - 10am to 11am

An introduction to Archaeology, including a brief presentation about pottery.

Introduction to Contemporary Dance - 10am to 11.30am

You will learn how to move, explore and create movement. Starting with technique, Christina will lead you through a warm up of whole body exercises before gently moving onto set phrases of movement. The workshop will then explore creative dance, allowing you to experiment with choreography as a group.

A Taste of Italian Cookery - 10am to 12pm

Come and learn how to make home-made Italian pasta from scratch and the techniques used in cooking to perfection.  This workshop will run in one of our professional kitchens under the guidance of a qualified tutor.

Hand and Nail Care - 10am to 11am

We will be looking into the condition of the skin and nails and the best ways to maintain them in good condition.  We will also be looking at what nail shape is best suited and providing top tips to help those nails grow. 

Learn How to Paint in Watercolour - 10.45am to 11.45am

Enjoy experimenting with watercolour and building up a painting.

Introduction to Italian - 11am to 12.30pm 

This workshop introduces students to the language, covering very basic vocabulary and grammar as well as touching on cultural aspects, such as local customs, culture and the people. This is a great opportunity to ‘try out’ the language and have a go at the learning experience.

Makaton - 11am to 12.30pm

This session is designed to give a brief insight and fun experience of the Makaton Language Programme.

Photography.  You can’t do this with a Phone Camera – Blur the Background - 11am to 12pm

Take your digital camera off its Auto setting and find out how you can blur the background in a photo but keep the subject sharp. This is a hands-on session so bring your camera!

How to Decorate a Drip Celebration Cake - 11.15am to 12.15pm

Learn how to cover a cake in buttercream complete a drip design. Watch a tutor led demonstration and learn how to arrange and decorate this modern celebration cake with sweet treats to finish it off.  Take home the cake recipe used and taste the cake at the end of to the session!

Healthy Eating and Nutrition 11.15am to 12.15pm

We will be looking at how food controls our mood!  A simple guide to the right and wrong approaches to food and diets and how to start your new journey with the foods you love.

Make a Clay Animal or Bird - 12pm to 1pm

You will learn how to model your own animal or bird using air dry clay.

Relax and Stretch Yoga - 12pm to 1pm

You will learn how to breathe deeply to release stress and anxiety.  We will be practicing gentle stretching exercises using some yoga poses.

Hair Cutting for the Family - 12.30pm to 1pm

We will introduce you to the basics of cutting hair, giving tips on the best methods to achieve results. 

Improve the Condition of Your Hair - 1pm to 2pm

We will introduce you to the basics of self-caring for your hair.

Scriptwriting for TV and Film Introduction - 12.30pm to 2.30pm

This workshop will cover the fundamentals of Scriptwriting for both Television and Film. We will look at the industry standard format that scripts take, as well as cover some of the key aspects of telling stories for a visual medium.

British Sign Language - 1pm to 2pm

Come along to this interactive workshop and learn some BSL fingerspelling and basic greetings to assist you in communicating with the deaf community.

Make a Cute Animal Cake Topper from Fondant - 1pm to 2pm

In this session you will make a cute animal cake topper to take home. Under step by step guidance from the tutor, you will learn skills along the way.

Photography.  You can’t do this with a Phone Camera – Moving Subjects Sharp or Blurry - 1pm to 2pm

One of a digital camera’s superpowers is that it can show moving subjects as sharp or blurry. Find out how in this hands-on session. This is an interactive session so please bring your camera!

A Taste of Chinese Cookery - 1pm to 2.30pm

You will learn how to make a traditional Chinese dish of Orange Chicken and Egg fried rice, a healthier alternative to the traditional takeaway.  This workshop will run in one of our professional kitchens under the guidance of a qualified tutor.
